Thanks guys for all the kind words...it really has been humbling. But in all honesty, I was blessed to be on the right spot at the right time. I have a great friend who lets me hunt his 80 acres with him. We have spent a lot of time together in the woods and on some different hunting trips, but I'm always cautious not to "wear out my welcome" on his place. I hunt it maybe 3 times a year and on this particular evening, it was the first time I had been out on his place for the season. I left my stand in from last year and had already checked it to make sure it was safe and sound. We knew there had been some good deer around by his trail cameras, but he hadn't seen a buck on the place in over 3 weeks. My stand is in a cherry tree on a steep hillside loaded with briars, osage trees, cedars, and walnuts...just some real nasty thickness. Trails criss cross the whole place. My buddy had been hunting the opposite side of the farm where there are more mature, open hardwoods and not had much luck, so I thought, maybe, just maybe the buck were in the nasty stuff on my side. As luck would have it, they were or at least two of the them were. Cool thing is my buddy has video of this guy sparring with another buck last year and a couple trail cam pics from last year. Same antler configuration, but a lot more horn this year. We didn't have a good tape, but an old metal tape measure showed the left beam to be a little over 24", the left G2 was over 12" and the G3 was over 9". Those are the only numbers I know at this point. As for my setup, I was using my son's Samick Sage takedown, 45#, 2216 XX75 camohunters and some seriously old school Bear Razorheads that I had bought at an auction about 7 years ago. These were the old ones that are sort of an olive drab color in the middle of the head. They sharpened up to a razor edge. I am lucky that the buck came in pretty quick because I know I'd have came un-glued if I had too much time to think about the shot. Anyone who has seen me shoot 3D knows I'm less than average shooting foam, but if I get some meat in front of me at 15 yards or less, I can usually get it done. Thanks again guys and I hope everyone has a great and safe hunting season. Now to get my son back out to get a deer!
