Hello all, being new to the forum I figured this was a good place to start. I'm not new to trad bows but this was the first season my fiancee, Rachel, decided to lay down her compound and pick up a longbow. She had the goal of shooting a doe and getting her first Trad kill this season. She started shooting the Saxon American Longbow back in the spring and got good enough with it that she felt confident inside 20yards or so.
About 2 weeks ago we met up after getting out of the woods and she was as excited as I've seen her in a long time, I really figured she shot one. Turns out that she had a group of does pass through and she shot at the biggest one but shot high and missed.....twice (grin). She said that missing that doe with the longbow had her more excited than killing deer with her compound.
So another week goes by, and last friday I worked late so she hunted by herself. She comes home after dark and is now REALLY excited. She told me she had a doe come through and she was in range so she started to draw and then got too excited and had to stop and force herself to calm down. She calmed down and made the shot and hit her good. She told me she didn't think she had gotten much penetration but the hit was quartering away and solid. We got a quick bite of supper and then headed out. Started tracking and found blood almost instantly and then the upper half of the shaft not far away. She had gotten quite a bit more penetration than she initially though. The 125gr Magnus did exit the off side. We found her doe after an easy 100yd tracking job.
Now she's hanging up the compound for the rest of the season and going to stick with the longbow to fill her buck tags. Looks like now I'm going to have to buy her a Longbow of her own, we have another Traditional addict, and I couldn't be more proud of her!!! I appreciate being able to share this with you guys!!!
