Found some family history. Now I have a new goal.
« on: October 26, 2010, 01:17:00 PM »
As I'm getting more and more into traditional archery hunting again I decided to dig through the collection of archery stuff my dad and I have accumulated.

My Dad started me out with a recurve as soon as I could pull a bow and had me hunting with one by the time I was 10.(Thanks Dad!)

Now Dad has put down the bows and just hunts with a crossbow.  A couple years ago he gave me all his archery stuff.  I just set it aside and left it alone.

Well I found three bows my dad made.  A self bow and two fiberglass backed longbows (75lbs @ 28in made in 1985 and 60lbs @28in made in 1982).

My goal now is to get good enough with trad gear to pick up one of his bows and kill a deer with it.  It then become a longbow that was made by my Dad and used by two generations to take deer.  If I'm lucky they will last until my son can use them and carry on the tradition.

Man, that is awesome.  A suggestion, use the lightest bow of the 3, tune some arrows to it, and shoot it exclusively for a while.  You're eye will become attuned to the flight and you'll be ready to go in no time.  Shoot at tennis balls thrown around your yard for practice.

Shooting well enough to hunt isn't that difficult.  You just need to have a consistent form.  If you haven't already, go to the Shooter's Forum and look at Terry's form clock.

Good luck, and post some pictures of those bows.

Brian, that is just an awesome goal, go for it! Just me, but I'd leave that self bow alone right now. Pull on that 60 pound fiberglass bow until you get confident with it, then go hunting. The 75 pound bow is a lot of weight so wait a while on using it, and self bows are usually tillered to a certain draw length and are not happy about being pulled past that length. Hang that self bow up, and adimre your dad's skills, you don't need to shoot it since you have two others ... just my opinion. Good luck, and let us know your progress.

Good luck!  sounds like a goal that will carry meaning for you through out the process and long after you have succeeded.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Thanks for the encouragment guys.  My plan is to work with my 45lb recurve until I can redevlope my form then I'm going for the 60# longbow.

I hope to have some stories and pics for you next deer season.

Thats awesome!!!! Im kinda in the same boat as but my grandpa gave me my first recurve. He tells me a story of how he was hunting in some nasty back country hunting mule deer he had just bought this boy it was a bear super kodiak. well he headed into a spot where he had seen a big group of bucks the day before. Well he got in there right at light and found the bucks with a quiver full of arrows the bucks started funneling out one by one and one by one every one of his arrows sailed over everyone of those bucks backs. the next day he went into town and bought a custom bow from his buddy and never used that bear bow again. until two years ago i picked up and shot a cow elk with it on my first trad hunt lol bad luck for him good luck for me
