It was cold ,rainy and windy yesterday , which made for 8 hours of not seeing anything but 1 yearling. No squirrels, no turkeys and almost no deer .
But this morning was different as the cold front rolled in during the night and I awoke to a still cold morning :cool: . We had a heavy freeze with freezing fog this morning. The weather lady assured a sunny morning .
I was setting in one of my favorite stands where a finger point intersects with the main ridge - the persimmon patch.
About 8;30 I heard a squirrel bark a scolding at something out the main ridge . I started watching in that direction and soon saw a small buck headed towards me . It turned out to be a small 4 point and I let him pass .
30 minutes later I saw an familiar face - a doe nicknamed spastic -crossing the ridge about 60 yards away . She skirted around me and continued on down the point . She has a six sense as when not to go somewhere, she always comes out on top .
Ten minutes later I'm still grinning from my encounter with Spastic , Is see another doe and yearling coming right on the path past me . She got down wind and knew something was wrong but continued to stomp right on past me . I couldn't even blink an eye as she had me .
After she passed she went over the hill to a bench an started feeding on more persimmons. After some time I heard more deer coming from down the hill and saw a big doe with 5 deer behind her coming on a trail that will lead her right past me at about 10 yards .
As she entered the opening in front of me she stopped right where I wanted to shoot her . I had a spot picked on her side until I saw she had a BIG GASH on her back like someone had already shot her across the back . I refocused on my spot and came to full draw ,felt my back tension and the release just happened . The hit sounded like throwing a big wet towel on a tile floor , but I wasn't sure where it hit other than it was a complete pass through. She immediately fell down on her left side , which took me by surprise . She then ran around a downed tree in the shadows with 7 other deer and disappeared over the hill.
Not sure of what just happened I stayed in the stand for 1.5 hours before getting down. The arrow didn't have a lot of blood so I backed out ,went home ( 500 yards ) and eat some breakfast . After lunch, 3 hours after the hit I took up the trail, it looked like a liver hit from the sparse blood trail but the blood was bright red like an artery had been hit . After 200 yards I was getting worried . At 250 yards I look down near another stand of my ( ANDY'S ) to see her laying dead here is what I found.
Almost perfect shot placement, don't know why she fell down.
Here is the gash she had in her from someone else cutting her :eek:
The autopsy showed I had hit 1 lung and cut the bottom of her heart out, why she went so far I'll never know .
But I love cold still mornings in November !
