Ok here are the specifics to my question, my little 20 acre woods borders on 2 sides of a large 1 mile square woods. My north east side is a corner bordering a hayfield to the north edge and a cornfield to the east edge, this is where I hunt in this corner. This is a great spot except when we get a northern wind (our primary wind is from the south west ) comes along, and for the last few years it seems like we are getting more northern winds which blow my scent right into where my deer are coming from. This north east corner is a nice spot, has a few wild winter apple trees, borders a hayfield and a cornfield.
In the past I have been a tree hunter I just hopped my scent was above there heads, and yes I have been busted using this logic. With age and wisdom I want to get out of the tree for safety reasons, I'm too old to take a fall, I have lost my young invincible thinking.
To hunt a northern wind for me means to head straight into the middle of my woods, my deer come from the south, they are always going to be downwind from me, my woods is not big enough to get downwind from them. I only have the one woods, I can only hunt the weekend and really don't want to give up half my season to northern winds. I did just cut a clearing to open up the apple trees to get light, this clearing is about 200 yards from my north east corner, maybe they will come in here from the west and that would help me, I guess I should of piled the brush in a way to force them to come in from a wind friendly direction.
What do others do for a poor wind direction ? Any advice ?
