Climbed on a ridge dropping post oaks this evening. I`m tagged out on bucks so I`m an official doe hunter. I`m good with that.I do have some Buck chances on the local WMA check-in hunts coming up but for now its does and porkers.
The oak ridge is maybe a three acre island in the swamp of the satilla creek. Its a blackwater creek and is mighty purty with white sand banks. The ridge has two post oaks that are feeding and a poor shot like myself has to commit to one or the other because they are about 50 yards apart.I eased in and listened a bit to decide which one to sit. The squirrels were in one and not the other so I climbed a pre woodpeckerd tree and got settled. At 4:45 a 1.5 year old doe came from the swamp and fed under the "other" tree. Plenty of light left and the squirrels don`t lie.At 5:05 she was standing at 10-12 yards slightly quartering to me. I waited for her to turn and she slowly did with her front leg back. About that time wood ducks hit the water about 75 yards away and she almost turned inside out but stayed under the tree. I gave her a minute to calm and she moved a bit feeding. after I thought all was well I picked a spot and shot. The doe dropped hard and whirled. The arrow hit high and downward ..it was a 6 yard shot .I knew I hit shoulder but after a short run there was that crash that makes a swamper smile.
A fella had a thread a while back asking about woodsmans so maybe this will help you. I`m shooting a 47@27 64" Mohawk longbow which is a fine longbow . 29" 2016 with an old woodsman given to me by a good friend Jeff Roberts. He actually gave me a whole pack in the style 2XL sold. With an adapter its 168 grains. Hit this deer square in the shoulder and the tip was at the skin on the other side.Did`nt run 75 yards. A very fine broadhead I would recommend for most any reasonable draw weight.
Check out my game hauler. I built this from two lawn mower handles and the back wheels from an old lawn mower years ago...It helps to have a son strong as a horse. I don`t know how much longer I can play this hurt leg thing.....Thank you Lord again.RC
