Broad head weight/arrow setup with bow change
« on: November 13, 2010, 01:15:00 PM »
I am needing all new arrows, essentially starting from scratch all over again after a 5 year hiatus from archery hunting.

My current hunting set-up will be 55# recurve @ 28' although my draw length is closer to 27.5.

Me and an old buddy have plans to build a longbow in Feb, and I would like to be able to use my arrows for that bow too. I will be aiming to make it 65-70# pull

I will be shooting carbon arrows.  Any recommendation on shaft size and length?

Routine game animals that are "common" and will mostly be pursued with these bows...White-tail**, Turkey,  Pig and Gator.

Me and the above buddy are also making plans to make a trip for Caribou or Elk in 2 years, and I would like to not have to change broad head size or weights.....I don't mind having a little "overkill" now so I can "know" my gear and be prepared when the time comes....

A lot depends on your point weight. For example i'm shooting Goldtip 5575 with 275 grains up front full length out of my 55# Dakota Pro Hunter. I don't think you can answer this question without the point weight.

For years I practiced with 100gr tips, but I have been looking at the Harvest reports section, and also looked at the "Abowyer" site and noticed people were shooting points up in the 200s

Is 100gr adequate for deer, caribou or elk? or do I need to go up to 150?

DXH, the important things are the total weight of your arrows and how well tuned they are. Higher point weight will increase your FOC, i.e. make the balance point of the arrow closer to the point, and lots of people here who shoot carbons think that extreme FOC is important. Personally, I think that as long as the point end of the arrow is heavier than the fletching end, you can tune to good arrow flight and performance on game.

I think you're asking too much to try to build or buy bows to match your arrows instead of the other way around.

When you get your new bow built, you will be able to choose the proper arrows by testing. There are too many variables to figure it out in advance.

Don

Sent you a pm, about tuning

I am just trying to figure out what will work for all the types of hunting I plan/want to do and with my future upgrades...I think that is one reason I lost favor with it in the past was I kept monkeying with too much stuff

Been trying, Bjorn. This morning I didn't even make it out of the septic system drain field behind the house before I was snorted at. Game over before it started!
