Wow, what a great response from you folks!

I've always enjoyed watching the hawks and occassional eagles around home.  This was a big event for the family and we spent 2 1/2 hours waiting for the bird rescue.  We were afraid to leave him for fear of foxes or just not being able to find him again.  Here's a few more photos.  To be honest he was totally relaxed and some of the photos I took I was laying in the alphalfa no more than 2 foot away!

Just got some bad news folks.  I called the bird rescue to check to see how everything was going.  Unfortunately the injuries were more severe than just his wing and they had to put him down.  I hunt right next to a major highway and often times they get his hit coming down to catch mice in the median.

Sad day...especially breaking the news to my daughter.

Neat!

On morning I arrived to a ground blind I had in place well before sunrise.  As dawn came I was sitting mostly still and watching the area.  Then I noticed a tree about 15 feet from me had eyes.  I about filled my drawers!  It was a great horned owl about 8 feet off the ground on a low branch and he stayed there half-an-hour, giving me the eye occasionally but otherwise just doing what I was doing.  Eventually he flew off without a sound.

Magnificent.  A pity the hawk you found came to such an end.

That's very sad to learn.   Raptors are amazing and their comeback, due to strong federal legislation, has been a success story that ranks among the best.

You did the right thing by calling the the rescue.    The hawk was lost but certainly not the effort or the positive effect of your act upon those on this blog.    All life is precious.

So sorry that this one couldn't make it. I hope they will use his parts for education and imping damaged feathers on living hawks. Two good spirits met when you found him and called him in, and you got to meet more good folks when they rescued him. The bird was spared a lingering and horrifying death, so it seems like a good day's work to me.

I hate seeing the critters on the side of the road. I once found two great horned owls within a hundred feet of each other outside of Manassas.

Why is it that we have to go so damn fast?

Sorry to read the Red Tail didn't make it. It was probably an easier death than what it was facing.

Well, you can see that some folks don't read through a thread before running to the end to post    .  Tim sorry about the little guy not making it, but your concern for him/her is truly impressive.  Many folks have no idea how or why we who hunt can at the same time be so concerned about the welfare of wild animals.  Your spirit shows how we do care.  Thanks.
