Thanks, Tom!  Anybody else?  Anyone pulled the compass out and put something nifty in it's place?

I would go with another compass. I am not sure if you could find any diamond wood filler and have it refinished without the compass.

I can't even begin to count the number of hours I've spent looking at that compass in my Bear TD's......I'll admit to finding them quite interesting / entertaining during a hunt.

Can't think where but I've seen replacement compasses someplace.

A nice eating spike with a nice Black & Tan Bear TD

I've obtained replacement compasses directly from Bear. In fact I had a compass put in my Schafer Silvertip.

I love them and I don't hear anything from mine. Of course my wife says there are a lot of things I don't hear.

The last I looked, 3-Rivers had the small compass to put in risers.
Lots of nice Bears here, thanks for sharing.

I've been wanting to get my hands on this bow for 1.5 years. It arrived today for a "test drive".

This is a Bear Signature built by a retired employee without the gold plating. It is beautiful rosewood. The limbs come in at 46#@26"-probably 52@28" but I haven't checked that draw length.

This is a Type 1 B Riser.

The limbs make a 60" bow on this B Riser.

I put the very heavy dacron string that was sent with it on the bow. No silencers. It is 8 3/4" brace height. I put painters tape for a nock locator by eyeball. It is less than 1/2" which I'm sure is too low.

I am SHOCKED how quiet this bow is without silencers. It makes a loud twang when you strum the string so I figured it would be a noisy bow. It is very quiet, more so than some bows I have cat whiskers on?  Reckon I got lucky with the brace height?

It has a narrow grip (less than 5") and you can see from the pictures the shelf is right on top of the hand.

I shot a purty little group the first time i shot it.

I haven't decided if this bow will remain with me or not yet.

Sorry about the side-ways pictures. I saved them in the upright position but the wonderful Photo Bucket turned em over.

Yeah no doubt....that is a stunner for sure.

If you don't mind me asking....about what would that bow cost if you were to keep it?  It's WAY out of my price range right now, but one day I'll have me one of these bows.

Thanks for posting it.

Actually, I believe this describes a Type 2 riser. Type 1's had generally larger grips and had longer shelves and the bowhand would generally sit a good 1/4" to 3/8" further below the shelf.

Beautiful bow, in any case.

Thanks David.
I talked to the son this morning and found out a bit more.

The bow was custom built by and for the bowyer (I'm glad he is a lefty!) around 1995. So I'm sure you are correct. I haven't seen a Type A Riser since I sold one around 1995 because it was RH and I switched to LH.

The limb tips are FF compatible as well.

I'm going to find out more tonight when I talk to the bowyer. I'm hoping to find out that it is NOT 1 of 4 ever made this way so this retired biologist can afford it!

An "A" riser simply has a shorter sight window than a "B" riser. A "B" riser is a couple of inches longer overall than an "A" riser.

This is different than the Type 1 and 2 designation, more often referred to as "Series 1 and 2" to avoid any confusion.

As I understand it, the Series 2 grip was the preferred grip of Mr Bear who liked a narrower grip and a shorter shelf that sat closer to the top of his bowhand. It showed up within a year or so of the introduction of the Series 1.

Sorry David. I confused Type 1 with Type A.

I have or have had A and B risers in several Bear TD models. I prefer the A risers in most of the TD models. In fact, I had a Supreme built at the factory in an A Riser after I bought the B.

I do appreciate you pointing out the Series 1 and 2 description though. I had only heard that referred to as Type 1 or ...something after the first Custom Kodiak TDS.

There is a rumor going around that the new Red Stripes are being built with the slim profile as the Bubingas. Is there any truth to this? I love the grip on my Red Stripe. It was built in 2011 and is a bit thicker than the Bubinga.

Tom,

I've seen that trend in the Red Stripes... I have a buddy that has #69... mine is #121... and mine is thinnner than his... I've held others even thinner than mine...  I like the little thicker grip... all personal...
