I recently re-finished my grizzly (I know, not a take down but "Bear" with me for a second), I had to re-shape the grip more to my liking, the factory grip tended to roll the bow in towards the left. Anyhow, I got it shooting great and its rapidly growing on me so I was watching the Fred Bear History of the Bow series on youtube. Its a 3 part series with a good background from Fred's perspective. He shows his original take down he made along with the story of why he made it, then explains its
evolution to the take down that we (not me, but "we" as in archers) have today. Its a great series of short clips and I recommend it if you haven't seen it yet. Me, while I like the idea of a take down, I'm looking at a Super Kodiak next..

Just acquired my first Kodiak Take Down.  It's a 2013 Bubinga A riser with #3 limbs.  Great shooter but dang...does this thing creak like crazy.  It's the top limb and I can't figure it out.  All the pins and screws in the latch seem to be in place...any suggestions?

WOW!!

This is awesome that this thread has lasted this long and there are so many interested in it and love the Bear Takedowns.

I don't have one...yet.  I do plan on getting one.  I wouldn't need a keepsake or a rare bow, just something to shoot and hunt with and if it gets scratched, so what.  Heck I wouldn't care what handle it is, I like all the ones I've seen.

An "A" handle and either limb, to make a 45 pound bow.  Are you listening Santa?

Keep it coming guys..

To keep the limbs from making noise in the sockets, I just use a tiny spritz of spray silicon lube. It always works, and it lasts for up to a year before I have to do it again.

Recently purchased a barely used charcoal black "B" riser with #3 limbs. Beautiful bow and great shooter. Always wanted a Bear takedown and finally it came together over a phone call to a dealer who had one to sell.
A fast miss....is still a miss.

Been shooting my "B" mag with 60# no.3 limbs the past few weeks. I had thought I may be getting to old (69) for these limbs but I am able to shoot a 100+ arrows in a morning with no ill effects.
I have been pleasantly surprised at how well this combo has been doing for me. So far my old AO 2117 arrows with 145 gr. have been good. Combo even checked out on Stu's calculator to within a pound. It was only the second time I used calculator that I did not have to tweak the specs around. I wonder if this is the " magic combo" I have been looking for?
I have ordered some GT 55/75 shafts for my next experiment. I am wondering what others have done to get a match at this weight and arrow size? I like a 29in arrow for my 28in draw.
I am asking because I get a little frustrated at times with calculator and carbons.

M60gunner,
I shoot a Zipper Recurve at 55# at my 28" draw and like you, like to keep my arrows cut to 3/4" longer than my draw length. I had Big Jim cut my GT Traditionals 55-75 to 28.75". I used a 100grain brass insert upfront with 160gr Gr Grizzly BH and a 35 grain glue in threaded insert. So about 295 total grains up front. I use a vinyl wrap and three 5" shield cut LW feathers. They shoot like darts with good FOC weighting. (I think the FOC measured about 25%) I would bet the same set up would be close for you too!

I had this one some years back and regret everyday for selling it!   :banghead:   It was a real smooth recurve and very accurate.

Takedown, thank you for advice. I see if I am going carbon I will need to experiment. Footed carbons work real well here on the desert floor for that arrow that gets away sometimes.
I wish Bear would remake the metal handle. I know they use CNC for their compound risers. A new "A or B" riser made with forged alum would really round out their product line. IMO of course.

Hi Custom Kodiak addicts!
After I was looking for custom Kodiaks on the internet I stumbled over the Tradgang Forum and especially over this thread! Wow, wonderful bows you have and many useful information about Custom Kodiaks. I own already a few vintage ones, but after 2 weeks reading all of your stuff here it ended in ordering 2 of the last available All Bubinga risers (A + B as the decision was so hard) in a german proshop. Still waiting for them. It is hard to say, but the bug is already in me :-))
When I find time, I will post a pic of mine CK!
Regards
Kermit

Welcome Kermit! Congratulations on your purchase. I just shot my A riser with #2 RER aftermarket limbs a couple of days ago and Fred Bear certainly has a winning design that still performs with anything 44 years later.
