How Many Shoot and LOVE Bear TakeDowns?

How do you like the A riser and #1 limbs for a shorter 56 inch brush,blind bow etc for a 28 inch draw?

Steelhead:  That's what I've been using for turkey hunting for a good many years.  I have about a 28-inch draw.  The Bear TDs don't stack at that draw, but I can start to feel a little finger pinch.  Not so much feel it as not get off the string cleanly every time.  Regardless, I think it's an excellent combination for turkeys out of a blind. I go to a B riser or longer limbs on an A riser to make a 58-60-inch bow for my other hunting and target shooting.

Brace height question.  I have an older Bear chart that lists recommended brace heights for a couple of Bear TD combinations.
It recommends 7 1/2 to 8 1/2inches for a 56-inch bow and 7-8 inches for a B riser 60-inch bow. On my own bows I find that 8 inches is about optimal for my 56-inch bow and about 7 3/4 for the 60-inch Green stripe, both within Bear's paramaters.

Bear does not list recommended brace height parameters for the A riser, long limbs (60-inch) or B riser long limbs (64-inch) configurations.

I have my 60-inch A riser bow set at 8 inches, but it doesn't seem to be optimal and I'm still adjusting.

For those who have an A riser and long limbs, where do you set your brace height?

7.5” for all of them, or as low as I can go. Always working on ways to lower the brace, ie short stabilizer, heavy arrows, different string material and number of strands, etc. Can’t ever remember being over 8”, even back in the late 1970’s when I used an B Mag riser with #3 limbs at 84#. Yup was crazy then. Did kill a Black Bear in Wyoming with that bow.

Here is some more shelf comparisons between A Mag, 2017 A two tone and recently acquired A 50th riser.

A Mag is 16 3/8" overall with rubber shelf 1 3/16" above center(also pivot point of grip).
2017 Two tone A is 16 5/8" overall with rug shelf 1 1/2" above center.
2021 50th Anniversary A is 16 3/4" overall with rug shelf barely 1" above center.

Here is a recent addition to my Bear TD stable. 2021 all black A handle. First observations is this handle is much, much beefier(thicker) than my other wood handled risers that I own, including those that I no longer own. Wasn't sure I was going to like the lower cut shelf(see above)-I usually don't and the jury is still out on that till I shoot it-but with the overall thicker handle and a decent narrower than shelf throat of grip it does feel good in the hand. And it is heavier-don't have a scale to know how much but definitely can feel its heft.

Yep. They are chunky.  My 50th anniversary A riser weighs 29 ounces. That compares to 24 ounces for a blond action wood A riser, and 30 ounces for a B Green stripe riser. 

Nice looking riser BTW.

I've never shot a better bow. I have the A riser and #1 limbs, in bubinga and black maple. It's not perfect, but it's the best bow I've ever shot.

I got a new B wood riser a couple of years ago. The limbs make it 60" 55#@28. I draw 28"

All my shot go left. Like 10" from 15 ft. I started with 2016 then 2018 I'm now up to 2219 and the point of impact has moved to center. It just doesn't seem right. Suggestions?

All mine really liked stiff arrows shooting 3 under about the same weight.

Charlie.  You shouldn't need that stiff an arrow.  The newer Bears do come with low stretch strings, and they're no slouches in the performance department. But Bear TDs are cut to center.  With the synthetic side plate they put on them, they're proud of center. All that would point to a shaft about 10# over marked weight.  The 2018s should work, or 2117s.  What's your brace height.  If it's too low, your arrow may be glancing off the side plate and careening off to the left.

I'll get some measurements tomorrow and get back on here. Brace is very high. Like I said I need to make some measurements. I remember back when I got my first td in 1969 I got great performance from a very low brace height ala Kelley.

I found 2114’s work and have worked from my 55#@28 B riser for many years now. They weight 500 grains so I never questioned their penetration capabilities. Arrows flying the much left at that range makes me wonder about the bow? Now I can get arrows to do that but that’s because I lose my concentration or my form is lousy.
