Recommendations on back up strings?

Before I head to Hog Heaven in January, I want to get a back up string for each of the bows I'll be bringing.

I did call and send an email to bearbowman at the flemishstrings.com website but I have not received a return call or email.

Any referral for a source or recommendation for string material would be appreciated.

I have a 66" Mohawk longbow with a FF string and a 60" Whisperstick Voodoo stick, I am not sure of the material of the string, but it is noticably thinner than the string on the Mohawk.

I did do some searching, but without much luck.

I'm a stodgy 'ol B-50 user.  My recommendation would be to contact WhisperStik at (989) 287-3614 and Mohawk at (303) 674-1707 to see what string materials they suggest.  There are still folks in the world who don't use e-mail much.  ;-).

I have seen several bows split at the nocks from using the modern stretchless strings that were not designed for them.  Fast Flight is relatively "tame" anymore, but better to be sure.

There is nothing special about a 'backup string' other than it should be setup identically with string silencers, etc. and shot in and tuned for nock height and brace height.

Initially, I just make or buy two strings and set them up, and once the first string settles to final length and is tuned for nock height and brace height, I remove it for a backup and install the other string and go through the same process. Next time, just buy one new string and set it up, then take it off as the backup, and put the old backup on.

As suggested, contact the bow maker to get the recommended string (material, strands, length, etc.).

I'll bet I have a half dozen "backups" for each of my bows and any bow I ever owned. I used to buy/make a new string about every two years and save the old...set up and shoot the new all summer. I think I have about 2 dozen strings in bags n boxes (I also give them to friends to put on bows they pick up with crappy strings).... Do it quick, getting a new string set-up and shooting right may take a bit to get dialed in sometimes.

I did contact Mohawk. It comes with a Fast Flight, 3 inches shorter than the bow length.

The flemish string guy asks to be emailed, I did try calling, no answer or return call. I've done the basics, just looking for some guidance from folks with more experience than me.

Last I knew the whisper stick came with about a 10 strand D-97 string.  Contact Oliver Stacy in the sponsor list.  He is a friend of JD's.  Last I heard he was making strings for JD's bows.  He can tell you what they are and make you one.  Just make sure your strings are all set-up the same ways with the same string.

just get another string made for each bow.  don't matter if it's flemish or endless.  

any string material will get the job done.  however, modern hmpe polyethylene strings are technically superior in every way to those olde tyme dacron polyester strings.  don't be afraid to drop down the strand counts, either, for quieter/faster strings.  

spend a goodly amount of time setting up and shooting in all yer backup strings and you'll be good to go at hog heaven - just don't forget to take all yer strings with ya.  :D

As for material, I'm a dyna 97 guy.  Just starting to play with skinny strings.   Either way if you're bow can handle it I dont think you'll be dissappointed with d97.

If it were me not knowing WHAT you have....I'd build a few strings and maybe save the one you have as a backup.  Atleast that way you will now your primary and new backups are identical.

another route to take with strings is to build a single loop flemish bowstring.  

what?          

essentially, it's a "tillering" string.  the loop is for the top limb, and the bottom limb is a simply an adjustable bowyer's knot.  now ya have the best of all worlds in terms of bowstring length and brace height adjustment.  and that one string will fit a variety of different bows.  just make the string a few inches longer than the total length of yer bow and yer good to go.

at the minimum, all you'll need is a single color bowstring fiber, a serving jig and some center serving material.  cheap, super easy, super fast and simple ... works every bit as good as any double loop flemish or endless string!

i betcha this is how yeoman longbow battle strings were built back in medieval times.
