Wisconsin deer camp pics

At the beginning of the month, I once again had the privilage of spending a week chasing whitetails in northern Wisconsin with Schlaggerman, which we've done together for almost thirty years. He's generous enough to host this hunt every year, so I thought I'd share some of the pics taken during my time there.
   
This is the cabin that he had built on his forty a number of years ago. It's got a generator for electricity and a really efficient wood stove for heat. Refrigeration is Coleman coolers kept outside on the north side of the cabin. It's "roughing it" in a good kind of way.

   The view from the front door is a warm, welcome sight. That's Dale's old rosewood Staghorn XP60 that's taken up residency on the wall. With the dry heat from the woodstove I'd be afraid to string it up anymore, but it looks great hanging there. Sorry about the dark photo.

As you well know, once an animal feels a little pressured, it tends to go nocturnal with it's movements,such as feeding,rutting,bowel,etc...
This photo was taken with the aid of a trail camera set up inside the cabin. The nocturnal feeding Schlaggerman was caught redhanded raiding the doughnut supply.

Here's a look of me on watch at one of my favorite stands along a creek bottom. It's a nice place to watch a sunrise, listen to the coyotes, and once and awhile, educate a whitetail. That's my bow,"Coyote Ugly", standing guard with me.

It was November and the bucks were laying down a little sign to taunt us. I had a close encounter of the arrow-flinging kind on the third morning, but couldn't close the deal. The nice eight-point lived to chase another doe. Schlaggerman was getting close, but shot opportunities weren't falling into place for him...just yet.

When you want to hunt the swamps up there, it helps to have a little bit of packhorse in you. On this trek, I was using my Lone Wolf treestand as the packframe, while the pack contained treesteps,food&water,and lots of warm clothing. Plus the large insulated boots strapped to the outside. Notice the hip-boots needed to get through the knee-deep water to the high ground? It's all worth it though...

This frosty morning was one of my favorites. As I looked to the east, the rising sun lit up the frost-covered brush like it was made of crystal. Every water droplet sparkled as the light filtered through the trees. It was one of those "close to God" moments that we're bestowed every once and awhile. This picture doesn't do that memory any justice. It was impressive.

Most mornings were below the freezing mark, while the daytime highs were in the upper thirties. Perfect! As this pic shows, the majority of the puddles remained frozen throughout the day. Schlaggerman states that the shaded parts of his driveway thus fall under that oft-talked about location..."where the sun don't shine".

NICE place. A coworker was from Wisconsin and often reminisced of his days hunting on his granddads farm and spending time in the Dells. Been wanting to see it ever since....Phil

As always, the week went by too fast. I had another week of vacation, but I planned on using it in other parts of the state. So, after hunting Friday morning and getting a farewell visit from a fast-moving forky, I loaded up my gear and headed out.
   The next night,as I prepared to hunt on the other side of the state, I received a call from a very happy Schlaggerman. One of those close encounters he'd been having finally came to fruition. This buck followed a doe past his stand an hour and a half before dark on November sixth, and paid the price. The bad news is that I wasn't there to help him drag the brute out of the woods. Or is that the good news? Either way, "thanks" again Schlaggerman, and thanks to everyone else here for tagging along. I hope your season was as enjoyable as mine.
