I have no doubt (you have proof after all) such ideas work. However, I'll share one that didn't for me. When I was in Missouri in the mid-90's a deer trail was about 10 yards further from my tree than I wanted. So I built a brushpile about 4 feet high and similar depth in the trail. My intention was to bump the deer closer to me. The first time I hunted the stand a doe was coming down the trail. Boy was I excited to see if my plan would work. The doe came to the brushpile and yep, you guessed it, she jumped right over!
I did use sweaty socks to get deer to choose a trail closer to my stand one time -- saw it work too and then I missed the shot.
