a butt for bare shafting needs to be "non directional", meaning the composition of the material should not redirect or deflect the angle of arrow as it hits the butt.  this rules out stacked cardboard.  poly foam, baled excelsior and straw bale would work just fine.

My favorite material is furniture foam, like is used in sofa cushions. It catches the arrows without breaking them. I went to a local supplier and had several cubes cut. The soft foam "shoots out" rather quickly if you do a lot of testing, but with a cube you can keep turning it.

I use a large foam type target made by a guy in Georgia, Southern Outdoors. They are non directional and give good reading on bare shafts.
