fedora (hat) for my Fedora (bow)
« on: November 28, 2010, 06:32:00 PM »
My old fedora hat has shrunk over the years and I am looking for a new one.  Alas, I don't even remember where or how I got my last one and the label is long gone.  Any recommendations for fedora style hats?  My wife is always looking for Christmas presents for me so I would pass this on to her.  Thanks.  I am sure that any fedora will be a nice accessory for either of my two Fedora bows.   :)

I have a Fedora bow as well. Try " Noggin Tops "  I think they may have what you need.

I have a number of different styles available.  Check on thePrairie Traditions website below.

Here is a picture of one I wear frequently.

I got a nice one from Whip at Denton Hill this year, and it was on sale....more important than that was that it fit. I have a big head and when I find a hat that fits ....I have to get it....lol!

Wow, I did not know there were so many fedora hat people.  Whip, what is the difference between litefelt and lanolux?  From what I can read on the 'net, the latter is the wool felt treated with lanolin?  Am I correct and is there anything else?  Thanks.

Peter Brothers in Fort Worth... high quality, but pricey. Not sure I'll ever wear mine out.

Listen to "Whip". He will not steer you wrong. "Noggin Tops" would be my second choice. They have a good selection and good customer service, but if "Whip" has what you need buy from him(Prairie Traditions).

Thanks Bill.

I don't have all of them listed on my website - just some of what I felt might be most appealling to trad shooters.  But I can certainly get any of the hats sold by Bailey Hats.  If you want to see the entire selection check out baileyhats.com and look at the Hollywood collection catalog.

Both the Lanolux and Litefelt materials are 100% wool, and are soft, crushable, and water resistant.  Fold them up in a suitcase or pack and they pop right back to shape.  The Lanolux seems to be a little tighter weave and softer finish.  Bailey says that feel is created with a "sueding" process.  Both are nice, but I would rate the Lanolux as a nicer and more durable finish.

When the original guy owned NOggintops, I'd have voted for him.  I  have trouble getting hats that fit... He even sent hats on "approval" to try just to help. Not sure about current owners.

What I liked about the "crusher" I got was it had a very narrow "brim" so that it didn't interfere, and it was a soft felt "crusher" so it gave way to the string on draw.

Given Whip's rep, I'd now opt to go with him and ask his help to find what works... that small width brim thing really helped me!

My Three Rivers "Fred Bear" style wool felt pseudo-Borsalino.  Very nice at the price and I wear it to work frequently.

I also have a heavier non-wool camo hat from Cabela's.  I am a fan of a full brim.  As you can see from both images it frequently is doing something wet during our hunting seasons.

I use to wear Borsalinos, including an old one that Fred Bear gave me, until my daughter bought me an Akubra "Bushman" felt fedora a few years ago.  That's all I wear now.  I don't think you can beat an Akubra for the money.  The company has been making hats for a LONG time for people who work in the outdoors, so they know what they're doing.  In my opinion their hatbands are much better fitting than the more expensive brands.  The felt is buttery soft and bends easily when the wind blows or pushed by a bowstring.

Get an idea for what you want, and keep an eye on e-bay.  you can get some real nice hats for cheap.
