Who makes your favorite shelf?
« on: November 29, 2010, 04:52:00 AM »
Well?  Who makes it and why do you like it?

I like RER's.  They're small and as close to shooting off the web of my hand that I know of.
I sure don't have to do the match stick under the shelf material trick either.

Robertson for me.  The arrow sits right on top of your hand.

My Great Plains recurve is one of the very few that I very much like arrow flight directly off the shelf.

Me and a Nicholson cabinet rasp.  ;-)  You can just make out the original profile in the below image.  If the bow isn't right I make it so.

Low to the hand and just enough radius to be a single contact point (I further slip a small strip of leather under the main shelf pad).  High tangent point directly above the deepest part of the grip cut-out.

Robertson. The arrow has two contact points on the shelf and on the side, plus its directly above your hand. Its really the perfect design.

Any correct shelf will be radiused side back and front to the arrow contact and be contact directly over the hand. the sight window should also be radiused front and back and to the shelf. Any done that way should shoot good and the same when the bow is tuned to the right arrow.
God Bless you all and have a great day, Steve

I was always a believer of getting the arrow as close to your hand as possible until I tried shooting a higher shelf bow or off a rest. Just as accurate either way!! (and I don't gap shoot or POA)

The issue for me with a shelf near my hand (although it felt awesome) was contact issues when wearing bulky gloves or mitts. Here in Canada wearing heavy handwear is essential and arrow contact with the hand can ruin the shot. I once judged bows by the shelf but no longer.

To answer the question...any shelf that allows good arrow flight with my hunting gear on...Ryan

I like the black widow shelf on the TD bows because it is narrow.  I get no self wear or bad flight issues at all with these bows.  The one on my MOAB angles down from the riser to the edge a little plus has a curve belly to back.  I like that one a lot also because it has good clearance.  Probably my favorite is the Shrew shelf.  It is narrow and has a very distinct high point.

I don't like a wide shelf at all.  I don't see the need, and I find I get more shelf edge contact.  The only thing I like less is a shelf with a raised edge like the Centaur and others of similar design.  I just get to much shelf edge contact.

I like a shelf with a little room in for cold days when I wear a glove on my bowhand....I've had some bows that were just too close, and the glove rose up in the path of the shaft and feathers with a glove on.

I love all the variety.....and valid points from everyone.
I say be well rounded enough to see the advantages and disadvantages to both....and be able to make them all work!  So many beautiful bows out there.  I know if I said one or the other,  Id be changing my mind most likely by this weekend!  :jumper:
