Run across this while...

doing some scouting yesterday. i was walking along and heard something running through the leaves beside me and looked over to see this fellow scooting as fast as he could to the nearest tree. of all the trees in the area, he picked the smallest. he was only about 12 foot off the ground and i probably could have knocked him down with a stick, but he was still a baby so i just snapped a couple pics and kept walking. i had walked about 20 yards when i realized a raccoon this small wouldn't be alone, so i turned and looked around in the pecan trees in the area. there looking back at me were three other this size who picked much better trees to climb. didn't see the mother but would have been tempted to take a shot at her as i love baked coon.

I ate coon once. My cajun buddy cooked it up. I have to admit that I was a little worried about it at first,  but it really was pretty good. I'd eat it again no problem.

No eating them for me, I used to trap alot and know what they eat.  Dead skunks for sure is in their diet.

They're a little greasy for me. Haven't eaten one in years. You can bet momma was around somewhere though.

its just gotta be cooked right, NEVER judge an animal by what it eats. . . I'm a sucker for Blue crabs and catfish, and they eat some nasty stuff, lol

Haven't had coon since I was a kid. Our neighbor had coon dogs and every now and then he would barbeque one. They were very good barbequed! I remember he cooked them in the oven for awhile in a double pan and the top one had holes in it for the grease to run out and be caught by the bottom pan. Then he'd smoke them, don't know how long they cooked, but the meat just fell of the bone.

Nothing wrong with coon meat. Of course I found 'possum not bad either. BarBQue a coon then pressure cook a while. MmmMmmm Aunt Bea!...Phil

Ksbowman, Hope you mean a coon and not one of his dogs!    

I've eaten coon quite often, it's not bad, little greasy but edible. Guess it would be possible to get it a little less greasy, but then your also probably going to lose some flavor.
I consider them on about the same culinary level as groundhog. ( Ate a lot of those on the farm in West Virginia.)

Coon is excellent tablefare, my opinion. So is armadillo.

When I was younger I had a pet one. He would ride on the motorcycle with me and was a cute little critter... till he got older.
 He would hold the  middle of the handlebars and sit on the tank for miles, then climb up me and look behind.
 Nothing bothered him on rides, but as he became older he got nasty and finaly took off on his own.

I had one as a pet as well. Came up with the creative name of Bandit! He was very territorial and would whip most of the dogs in the neighborhood. He was a smart little cuss too and figured out when the neighbors were having dinner and how to open their patio door. I'd get the phone call "can you come and get your coon off our dinner table". Didn't take too many calls before ole Bandit got taken to the local nature park. They kept him on display for a lot of years in a big natural environment. One day he got away and never came back.
