tree stands for Moose hunting??
« on: December 01, 2010, 11:28:00 AM »
My Moose season is over now and no Moose! I had several close encounters but was always busted with the Moose still out of range. Hunting from ground blind made on the spot with local brush. I think my scent alerted the Moose each time. The ground is not level, hillside with gullies and lots of willow brush and swirling winds.Has anyone hunted from a tree stand and what is your experience? I haven't tried any cover scent yet and wonder if it might help.Actually one of my most enjoyable Moose seasons yet but I like moosemeat better than tag soup.  :banghead:  Bob

I have a friend in Ontario that is a guide and very successful moose hunter and he hunts them out of a treestand quite often.  He will put hunters in different treestands then call at one stand then move to the other stand and call.  This tactic has been quite effective for him and his clients.  I'm sure the treestand would work for you.

Thanks Sam, do you know if he uses any type of scent products. I am almost sure it is my scent thats getting me busted and am wondering if being up in a tree would help move the scent over the Moose and if it would help to have a cover scent.  Bob

I hunt both ways. While guiding this year we had the clients in treestand and would call from below. When a Bull would start working in we would walk off trying to steer the Moose under the hunter. Also a decoy works well during Rut. I shot this one from a treestand but I was deer hunting. Moose are fun!

It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

Stands work, but you lose the ability to re position or move in if you need to. A Bull circling down wind is usually not too sure about the call. Nothing will cover your scent enough, but mare in heat urine 30 yards or so to either side of you could help, but I've never used it though. Calling with a lake(from a point) or steep bank, rock face on your down wind side eliminates/minimizes the bull coming from that direction. The set up is most important. Check out this video clip of a bull I called in last year for a compound buddy. Good Luck.

Canadabowyer,
I hunted moose in Maine last year with Eldon Jandreau (Hunters point guide service). Eldon uses treestands some on long established moose trails. He recommends a setup with plenty of penetration or be prepared for a high entry with no exit.P.s. I did get a bull but from the ground with Eldon calling and using a decoy. Best, Todd

I have always hunted from the ground and done well on deer but can't seem to get a shot on a moose. I think a Chippewa wedge lock and a cow decoy is on my Christmas list. A friend who hunts with one of those unmentional contraptions used a decoy and a Moose bomb scent said his bull was so focused on the decoy that he got a 10 yard shot on the first bull that answered his call. This is just too much fun!!!  Bob
