New bow!.....New arrows?
« on: December 02, 2010, 09:13:00 PM »
I have a new bow coming in several weeks and with it,  I want to try carbons for the first time! (i have always shot wood) I have never built any,  so I wanted to hear some suggestions as to what people fancy!  My new bow will be an ACS CX ST 62"  50ish# @ 28".    Seems alot of folks like the Gold Tips.  There quite a few options in carbon shafting out there and I wanted to see what some of you are shooting!
Tell me about your carbon builds....and explain what you use for adhesives for fletch and so on...cap wraps or onto bare shaft, types of inserts.....the whole 9!  :wavey:    :notworthy:

35/55 Goldtip Trads left full length (30 1/2") with 50 grain brass inserts on the front end and field tips 125 - 145 grains. When I go to broadheads I pull the brass insert and use a glue in broadhead adapter and 190 grain Centaur Big Game broadheads.

They shoot out of everything that I have from 42# @ 29" up to 50# @ 29".

Congrats on the new bow you got a good one that will be a joy to own.  As for the arrows  Ihave had good luck with Gold Tips in that 50 lb draw range I would go with a 55-75 and plan on somehow putting 250 or so grains up front but that depends on your arrow length.  Try bare shafting a full length and then cutting it back a bit at a time until it flies well.  I like cap wraps and usually use Fletchtite platinum or Max cure or some sort of cynoacrylate glue.  The beauty of a Gold tip is you can put the weights they sell in the back of the insert to get your weight right or I like a 100 grain brass insert.  Either way the glue of choice for those is cynoarcylate.

The other thing is the Carbon Express heritage the trad only shafts and a host of others work just as well.  Hope that helps

I've had really good luck with 35/55 GT's at 30" with standard inserts and 200-250gr tips.  Sounds really soft spined but they fly great out of my 49-56# bows, including with broadheads (e.g. Grizzly El Grande)  Don't be afraid to try combo's that are out of the box, you might be supprised.  I really like Axis shafts as well.  You just can't kill them, even when they have a head on collision with a concrete loading dock from a 60# Groves Spitfire!

I had a 53#@28 ACS,drawn to 27" and I shot GT 55/75 out of it.The ACS does take a stiffer spine on them.My 57#@28 ACS I shoot 340 ICS Beman's out of it,and I even built out the side plate on it.They will take a stiffer spine then other bows of similar draw weight in my experience.

ACS CX is cut 3/16 past center if you want to use Stu's calculator.

Stu Miller mad a calculator for getting in the ball park with yaoure setup.
Pretty accurate for most.

Heres the link:
 http://www.heilakka.com/stumiller/

You need Excel or something alike for working it.
And download and read the instructions, otherwise there are plenty of possibilities for mistakes.
And sometimes our dreams they float like anchors in hopeless waters oh way down here
Sometimes it seems that all that matters most are all the things that you can't keep

I really like Beman MFX Classic carbons. They are small diameter, very durable, & heavier than many carbons. I've had 2 dozen this year and will get another 2 dozen this winter -- I've broken only 1 but I've lost 10 or so.

I put some figures in Stu's Calculator for you.

If your bow is 50# @ 28" and your draw length is 28" but your cut your arrows to 29". If you are using 125 grain broadheads, 3, 5" feathers and if your bow's window is cut 3/16th's past center the chart says you would shoot MFX Classics in the 400 size.

Lots of great info everybody.  And Bowwild,  thanks for the calculator work....you have my set up just about right too!  I do shoot 29" arrows with 3 5" feathers.....
The only thing about the MFX that concerns me is the HIT insert, leaving the exposed carbon....not sure if Im a fan.  I know they make collars to smooth the transition from point to shaft,  but Ive heard many mixed opinions of them....Im still looking into it though!

I have a ACS-CX 3pc, 62" 47lbs@28" and  around 50lbs at my 29" draw.

I shoot 35/55 GT at 29.5" with a 100gr insert and 125gr point, or a 50gr insert with a 175gr point.

Congrats on the bow, I am sure you will love it. They are as good or better then what everyone says about them. Good luck and have fun.

OK... I'll be the odd guy again...

I shoot Arrow Dynamics tapered carbons.  I have for a number of years and have shot the Nitro stinger yellow lettering (6.7 gr/in) which comes out at 350 deflection.  I cut those to 29" add 145 BH, long steel (125 gr) glue in adapt and alum. insert.  This puts you in the 470 gr area.  These are very forgiving to tune (foc is built in because of the taper) in fact I can shoot these on several bows from 45-53#

Just today I set up some Trad Lites.  These are also 350 deflection but they weigh 9.3 gr/in. They shot to the same point with the same performance as the Stingers.  I was surprised.. sort of....

I can not say enough good about these shafts.  You don't really need the calculator with these.  I can add 100 gr brass inserts and the 125 steel BH adaptors and the things still shoot to the same place with all the bows.

How simple can it get...........

I like the Beman ICS Bowhunters. They are durable, straight, and cheap. They also seem to be more consistent in spine than the Gold Tips I have tried. They would be a good starter carbon due to the cost.
