You might look at a product called Liquid Electrical Tape. It comes in a can with a screw top with a brush attached to the top. It is a rubbery coating that dries quickly and is intended for insulating electrical surfaces. Look in a hardware or marine supply store.
I have used it for a protective coating on edged woodworking tools, and it peels off.
Another product that smells and handles just like it is Whip End, sold in marine supply stores for finishing off the cut end of a rope.
Not sure about carrying the can with you for the return trip if you are flying, though...probably verboten due to the volatile solvent.
