Another Great day in the Ohio woods
« on: December 15, 2010, 10:37:00 AM »
Yesterday afternoon I decided to brave the cold weather and get up in the stand I setup for my to buddys who are brothers and both coming home on leave from the Marine Corp this Christmas    :saywhat:  giving me confidence about my stand location I hopped up in there and was gettin settled in when a nice looking buck went running threw around 70 yards or so he didn't seem spooked but he had his head down and was trotting like he was still chaseing does I thought that was strange? Seeing that deer kept me warm for an hour or so then I started getting alil chilly but I had my mind set on staying till it was no longer legal shooting light and thats what I was going to do.

So I sat there enjoying the beautiful day and it was beautiful but cold only like 20degrees and 20mph winds and my hands were feelin it when saw what I think was a spike buck working his way to me.
20min pass with my hands now froze to the bow. it stops in a dark buncha brush 30-40yds and I couldnt see it anymore
Its now past shooting light and but I don't want to spook it and blow the spot up so I sit there another 10-20 min and nothin.

Now Im shivering and I gota get outa there so I get down slow and get outa the woods then practically run to the truck and try to warm my hands and they are killing me It took me awhile before I could even drive but I thawed out and made it home. I was glad to just see some deer and be out in the woods even if it means getting frostbite lol. I sure hope my friends enjoy it as much as me and hopefully get to harvest some game while there at it. Sorry for the long read thanks for reading everyone

Totally understandable!!

I tried for some bunnies yesterday myself. Apparently the bunnies were smarter than I was, they stayed at home...lol

I had on a pair of fleece gloves and a Howard hill shooting glove and the 3 fingers that went into the shooting glove felt all but frozen solid and hurt by the time I made it back to the truck.

Putting frozen fingers in front of the hot air vent isn't the smartest move either...lol That hurts like heck!!

I hope your buddy and friends appreciate the "homework" you're doing for them. Enjoy your time with them when they get home.

God bless,Mudd

Cold weather hunting can be tough, when I came in this morning from my sit (only 3 hours) My beard was frozen to my ski mask! I set in front of the wood stove for about 5 minutes before it unthawed enough to get it off!

The rabbits were holding tight on Sunday. We had a few jump right out from between us after standing there and talking. Didn't even know the rabbits were there and they were 2 yards away or less!

Good for you getting out.  I was out for several hours myself today.  Saw a coyote.

Also saw some day or two old deer tracks...

... and got close enough to one deer to touch him with my bow. He wasn't a shooter though...

Wow.. I had to work out in the cold yesterday. I do not think I would have lasted very long on stand.

You're inspiring me.  The kind of cold we're looking at for the next week or so isn't so nice, but I don't have any freezer additions yet this year so I need to get out.  Plus, I've always wanted to get one in the snow.

Not sure I'll make it in to a stand though.  May need to sit on the ground so I can just get up and walk if it gets too bad.

Thanks for posting.

I was telling my buddys girlfriend about my hunt and she was askin why I didnt have my good gloves on (she was thinkin of my really kickbutt long mittens like military ones or somthin) anyway there like impossible to get cold in. And I told her I didnt ware them because they would have effected my shooting      and she just didn't understand lol.

Thanks much! The knife is a KaBar Becker BK-11 aka the Becker Necker.  For the price (~ $30) I'd have a tough time beating it.  That's 1095 CroVan steel and is backed by KaBar's outstanding warranty.

I cleaned a deer with it a few weeks ago and it worked perfectly and cleaned up quickly.

Sweet - get the Becker but be warned... Once you get one, you will want another and another and so forth.  Get the BK-11 (or BK-14 - same blade, slightly different handle) and you will want a BK-2 (5 inch blade, quarter inch thick) or the BK-7 or the BK-9 and on and on.   :D   It's a sickness and I'm ok with that.

The bow is a Howard Hill Halfbreed - 60#@29".  Good stuff!
