« on: December 19, 2010, 04:02:00 PM »
Does anyone have a good how to or know of a site with pics on how to make a coyote back quiver? I have a case skinned pelt and wanted to make a back quiver. Thanks Steve

I made this one a few years ago for a friend using a build along on the PA "How To" section. I used the coyote face as the flap for the removable possibles bag.

I put the seam on the bottom of the quiver so I added the red garment leather to cover the seam and protect the stitching from broadheads.

That is an awesome looking quiver.Iv made a few also but not as nice as that one.i had a leather back quiver and took a tanned coon that id trapped and used it to line the mouth of the quiver with the tail hanging down the back.think i used fabric glue for most of it with just a little stitching.recently made a quiver for my boy out of a section of pvc wrapped with leather using fabric glue.this time i lined the mouth of the quiver with fox with the tail hanging down the back and braided three strips of leather into a back strap which i stitched on with artificial sinew.turned out very nice.he's only 3,but thinks he's something with his quiver and his little 9 lb longbow.now im working on one for my daughter.same style as my sons but using tanned skunk fur instead.might not be the style your looking for, just how iv done it,Ross

Thanks guys. I had never worked with hair on hides so I needed some help too. That's when I found the build along on PA.
A few tips though..do all your cutting from the inside of the hide with a sharp razor. Less hair loss that way.
The one I studied was made like a true Lakota style quiver with the decorative flaps and matching bow case. It was made up side down with the belly area up and the tail forward. I wanted this one facing the way the coyote would be facing, belly down(That is why the seam is on the bottom)and tail hanging off the back like a real coyote.

Here's a plains-style side quiver I recently finished.

A back quiver isn't much different... at the basic level quivers are just a tube with a strap.

You'll want to line the pelt with something for duarability.  That's really the only tricky part.  For a back quiver you can use something with a little more body it to hold it's shape a bit better.

If I can help in any way just give a yell.

My computer is a mess right now and I cant upload any photos, but here is a fox I just did for a guy in BC. I have pics of just about every North American species to give you ideas if I can get this damn pc straightened out. How small is the coyote?  If big you can reverse the head and have a large Hill style style or if smaller you can do one like the fox. If I can get things fixed here I'll do a build along soon. My hand is broken so I'm kinda limited, but still have a lot of pelts here to turn into back quivers.

Ferret, don't be crawling around on the ground with that coyote on your back. Predator hunters can shoot a long way!  d;^)
 Beautiful fox, David.
  Nice Plains style quiver, Jeremy.
Working with hair on hides can get testy when you are hand stitching and my nose itched the whole time I worked on mine.
