2011 Turkey Thread if i may
« on: December 23, 2010, 10:49:00 PM »
I'll start it boys, its never too early is it??? I plan on using my #55 Bear Montana longbow w/ 165gr Ace Express broadheads on 525gr KK German Pine arrows! I will probably get more penetration, if not passthroughs with this setup, as its my 2011 elk setup and a heavier finished arrow wt, i usually shoot 160 Snuffers, but what the heck! A Black Hills hunt thatll involve covering lots of ground and natural blinds, and then a MN hunt out of a pop up that ive managed to pull off the last 3yrs(how ill never know)! Next  :p

I will use my 56" Morrison ILF with timber rattler longbow limbs with 200gr vpa terminator.  51# @ 28.  Hopefully will use the 52# Shawnee for second with copperhead skinned recurve limbs.  I will go on a bow only hunt in Texas for the second year and hunt out of my double bull darkhorse.  Looking forward to it already, then come back to MS and hopefully score here.

Couldnt tell you what bow I will be using by then. But I can tell you I will take my usual week off work and hunt my butt off from dark to dark until I get one! I will be using my old Bear greenys with bleeders regardless of what bow I choose. They work great with just a filed edge for turkeys. Short track jobs follow.

I will be using either 68" or 66" Hill Wesley, both are 58#'s, Cedars or Surewoods and I think for the birds I will use a woodsman BH. I have shot 6 Turkeys and this will be the first time with a bow.

12 gage, 3 1/2 mag, turkey choke. If that works I might try my longbow. I commend anyone that can kill a mature turkey with a bow.

I'll be using my recurve seen to the left.  53# @ 28".  Easton arrows, 2216, with a 125 grain WW up front.  I put some weight behind the head as well, around 115 grains.  We'll see...  Good luck!

P.S.  Oh yeah, going to NE again and I'll hunt public land here in IL as well.

By the end of Feb. I should have my new Stalker (Tracker model) longbow that I won in the recent contest. It will be 58", 55# and made with woods in black and gray shades for use in my blind. It will also have carbon limbs. If it is a shooter (I haven't shot a long bow in a long time) i may use it for turkeys and give my DAS with HEX 5 limbs the Spring off. Don't know about arrows yet  because I don't know at this point what it will like best.

I would love to kill a turkey with a trad bow.  Never killed a turkey at all, but might as well do it with a bow.

Thinking about trying some Bullheads out this year. Also trying to get up to Nebraska's panhandle area. Time will tell.

I plan to hunt in KY, NE, and if the NE hunting goes well, I'll go north a couple hours to South Dakota.  This should be the most out-of-state effort I've put into turkey hunting...ever. Easterns and Merriams. I have a great place to hunt Rios in Kansas(I lived there 3.5 years) and a friend who would put me in the Osceola woods in Florida -- can you tell what I'm thinking?

I am quite certain that whatever I describe as my set-up will change by April 1st.

I hope I'll be hunting with a new Silvertip but that would probably be pushing the delivery date on my ordered bow by 2-3 weeks.

If not the Silvertip then one of my shorter "blind" bows -- 56" Bear Takedown, 56" Checkmate, or a 58" The Stick or loaner Silvertip. Which ever bow I use it will draw 46-49 pounds at my 26" draw length. I'll use a bow quiver but it will come off in the blind. I'll be using a Double Bull blind.

I'm certain of the arrow I'll be using though. I'll be using my beloved Beman MFX Classic Carbons in either 600 or 500 size. If the 600 I'll be using 100 grain Helix or Silver Flame. If the 500 size I'll be using 150 grain Helix or Silver Flame.

I will be hunting California and anywhere I can, I will be using a Pronghorn Longbow 62' 52@28 with some new Footed Spruce arrows tipped with a Big Zwicky Delta Broadhead.

I will be hunting KY, and shooting my RER Vortex 58" 45#@28" Easton Axis 500 Magnus 2 blade. Hunting mostly out of blind. Going to try and do some serious scouting this Spring, and get some birds patterned? Good luck to All!....KY

A few of us are planning to head down to Kansas again. I'll be using a 60" 52# Kempf Little Grizzly and Woodsman Broadheads. I got my first last year and had a blast!! Lookin forward to a road trip!
It's really simple. Just don't take those borderline shots. Tomorrow is another day.

I scared quite a few Rio Grande birds in Kansas from 1989-1992 trying to hunt from natural blinds that weren't quite tall enough to cover my upper limbs.

When I went into the pop-ups my turkey hunting luck changed a LOT!  I must have been moving around a lot when out of the blind and spooking birds I never saw.

I will stick with my Horne T/D Brushbow 47# and any sharp broadhead. I used the same broadhead on both of these birds. A 125 grain Magnus Stinger with the bleeder blade on a GT 3555 with 50 grain insert.

My girl friends son Trevor with his first turkey or trad harvest for that matter. He only had this bow for 3wks., which is a Samick Sage 50# with a Magnus 2 blade 125 grain and 50 grain insert on a 3555 GT:
