Southern NY Goose hunting?
« on: December 24, 2010, 06:25:00 AM »
I've had a serious hankering to hunt geese over decoys for a long, long time.

Problem is, I don't personally have a spot to do it.

I see there's a late season coming up in late Feb./ March(in the southern ny section) that might give us time to put a hunt together.
 http://www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/28496.html

Anyone out there with a cornfield or something similar, that might want to share with a couple TG'ers to get together to fling some arrows at some honkers?

I mean how much fun would it be to get them right over the deke's, totally committed, backflapping about ten feet off the ground and let an arrow go....how cool would that be!

I know I could get 4-5 guys right off the top of my head that would be in...probably couldn't make it too big...I guess it would all depend on the property...

I have flu-flu's and bh's ready to go....

Merry Christmas to all...

Curt,

I used to goose hunt quite a bit.  Getting permission was always pretty easy.  We would drive around looking for fields the geese were using, go see the farmer and ask.  We had a pretty good track record and eventually developed a bunch of good goose hunting areas.

Good luck and Merry Christmas.

Curt, There are a lot of good places along the wall kill river.  I never actually hunted the fields as I was too lazy to get permission. I used to drift in my boat and hide in overhanging trees.  (this was before I re-discovered archery).

Usually we would catch them from their overnighting areas and headed to and from the corn field.

There are a few HUGE flocks near New Paltz. I bet wall kill valley farms would let you use their property if you ask.

Good Luck and take picture.  (like I need to tell you to do that   ;)     )

There's a few cornfields around here I know of that are always attracting geese. Let me ask around and see if I can find p;ermission to hunt some of them...

Thanx Keith, you too bud!

Charlie, You're right buddy, I need to go and ask around. I'm sure a lot of places around here are sick of them.

Chris, Are you in what is concidered the southern zone for geese?

Shawn are you in this southern zone?   If so there is a season coming at the end of Feb. into march that we;ll have to try!!!!  For sure   :bigsmyl:

Charlie, you're right about Wallkill View Farms having a lot of geese but last I knew they weren't letting anyone hunt those geese.Besides, they only own the narrow fields on the southside of route 299 and the Jehovahs have the rest.
A better bet might be Gills or Davenports Farms in Hurley/Stone Ridge.

Hah, just rechecked the map and unfortunately no. Not in the southern zone for geese. Darn shame, too...starting to get my hopes up and all...

I forgot about the all the Jehovah (Watch Tower)property around there Jeff.

I forgot about the Stone Ridge area, I remember seeing a lot over there, and it seems more agricultural and less touristy.

Curt, I have a few really good fields with thousands of geese nearby. Tyler and I killed several the other day. I have some decoys as well. We can hook up with you and Shawn or you guys can come down to me.  Just let me know. They've been very regular and I'm sure we could lose a few arrows. Just let me know.

Interesting Curt...Let me make a few calls to some friends over in Dutchess County. They just might give the OK for hunt.

Curt, I don't know if we are in the Feb. hunt area. I saw the regular season ends Jan.3rd for us.

Give me a buzz sometime and we can setup a time.
