Feathers Galore
« on: December 30, 2010, 03:05:00 PM »
After acumulating quite a bunch of feathers over the years and seldom having time to grind them I decided I needed some help. Charlie Jefferson, (stringstretcher) and I had coresponded a time or two about other stuff so I gave him a holler. We worked out a swap that we thought was benificial to us both but I think I got the better end of the deal.  ;)  Just recieved them and am tickled, Charlie does great work, I'd highly reccomend him. Thanks again Charlie.

Good haul Doug! My favorite fletching. The only downside is that they are invisible compared to modern bright colors. I get around this with "tracers" of white rabbit fur. It gives me more confidence to shot a feather from a bird that can actually fly! Good Hunting!

That is a "beautiful thing" Doug! I have some that I'm sending to him for grinding. Good to see his work!

Just as a reminder, Doug also donated 100 of his feathers, along with my grinding that we donated to the Surtees fund raffle.  Rob is enjoying everyone of those now.  And trust me, that pile is just a sample of the amount he had.....         Thanks again Doug, it was all my pleasure for sure.

I'll have to get in touch with him too. I just picked up 5 or 6 turkeys out of the freezer that I thought I might someday have one of them mounted, but I think I'll be getting ahold of him instead......

I've ground plenty myself, but doing it freehand, they just never turn out as well...

I think there were something like 750 feathers to start with, that pile is just the LWs  ;)  I'd guess you get an average ten feathers off a turkey so that'd make 75ish turkeys. Like I said been collecting for a while. Put the word out and once folks find out you want them they'll start coming out of the woodwork.

Yea Shaun, wild turk feathers just can't be beat for toughness but they are a little tough to follow sometimes.

Years ago I built me an actual feather grinding jig that works very well but they still aren't as good as Charlie's not to mention finding the time...

Thanks again Charlie

I just got some goose feathers from Charlie (stringstretcher) and they are beautiful(ground and cut perfect).I spent the last two days fletching 2 dozen arrows with them(will be posting pics tomorrow). He does some great work!
