We just got back from West Texas last week.  A group of 6 went.  The javelina were tougher to find this year, but we still got 8.

So far its been an interesting javi season.  The places where I normally kill pigs have been empty.  I have on the other hand found some fresh lion kills.  If I were to guess I would say that the top of the food chain [mountain lion] around here has had an affect on the pig supply.  Good luck on your hunts.

Ok here we go, sorry for taking so long. My hunting partner Kevin and I got into Benson Arizona about 3:00 pm Friday the 31st of December. A little on the cool side, with just a little light snow falling. This is blizzard conditions for a flat Lander like myself. (Just kidding). I have lived in snow before in Idaho for a few years.
Well the cold front moved through over night and it was cold in the morning, low teens. We headed out around 7:00 from the motel, that's first light in the southwest. It's a 20 mile drive to the ranch that we have permission to trespass on to get to the San Pedro River. It's not really much of a river, it flows under ground for 50 or miles and comes up to the surface every few miles. So we headed up the river to our small water hole that we had been setting up on for the past few years. And guess what? No water, the summer monsoon rains had covered it over with about a foot of sand. No sign of pigs or anything.
On to plan B.

Plan B
We walked on up the river about a mile more, still no water or pig sign, so we turned around and headed back to the ranch. Went past it south 1/2 mile, still no water but found some good javie tracks crossing over to a alfalfa field. Ok, now on to plan C. Set up on this field for the evening hunt. Well the evening hunt went good exempt the javies came out about 300 yards down from us, the wind was wrong and no cover, so we just watched them feeding. Thinking about tomorrow morning's hunt and how to go about it. I'll be back, I need to down-load some pictures for the rest of the story.

Ok, Sunday morning, back on the alfalfa field about 8:00. You don't need to be up at the crack of dawn to hunt javies this time of year. They don't get out of their beds until it warms up.
I set up on the west side of the field near the river, and Kevin sets up on the south side of the field. The wind wasn't the best for me, blowing out of the south-east,so anything that came from the river on my left was not good.

About 9:30, 12 javies came out of a field behind Kevin, but about 60 yards away and 200 yards from me, so we both just sat and watched them. After about 30 minutes I looked to my left, down wind about 30 javies started coming, out of the mesquite trees into the field 50 yards away.
Well I thought I was busted but they didn't smell me and kept feeding, and all of a sudden something scared them and they ran back into the trees and headed my way.Now they were behind me, out of my wind, so I nocked a arrow and got ready.

The first few pass within 10 yards. They were a little on the smaller side about 40 ponders, shooters for sure. I know this herd and there are bigger ones. A shooter came into my view at 14 yards. I picked a spot on the white collar and let go. It looked like a good, hit just a little back, but then all hell broke loose!! Pig's were going everywhere!
After every thing settles down I started tracking. I picked up a blood trail and my broken arrow after about 60 yards.
After that it was on my hands and knees for another 60 or so yards, under the mesquite trees to a sinkhole near the river. That's where I found her in a small cave. Dead as hammer, arrow had past through the liver. She was my second best in 24 years, she went just under 70lbs on the hoof about 50lbs field dressed. The next day Kevin got his, a shooter 40lbs plus.
The rest of the week spent scouting for new spots to hunt, and a little deer hunting but didn't see much. Thanks for coming along.
