Questions about Paul Schafer
« on: January 10, 2007, 10:08:00 PM »
Seeing the post about Paul Schafer here made me want to ask a few questions about the man that I could not figure out by looking at the website given. Being naturally inclined learn all about my favorite bow hunters equipment, I thought I'd ask a few equipment related questions.

What kind of bow did Paul use? Also, what kind of arrows did he use, from some of the pictures it looks like he switched to aluminum when they became popular. Did he shoot off a rest or the shelf, 'cause I thought I saw an elevated rest in one of the pictures.

Answeres to these questions and any other tidbits of info would be greatly appreciated.

Timberbound:
Paul shot a bow of his own make, The "Schafer Silvertip" and off an elevated rest. Give Dave Windaur a call at Schafer bows he can probably fill you in on Paul's equipment.

I hunted with Schaf for 15 years.  I could argue with him all day long about wood versus aluminum and he would just grin at me!  He always shot aluminum off an elevated rest.

I have been bowhunting for 49 years and had a chance to rub shoulders with some of bowhunting's best.  In my not-so-humble opinion, Paul Schafer was the greatest bowhunter who ever lived!  I seriously doubt there will ever be another to equal him, certainly not some of these 'possum grinning clowns who are trying to be famous!  Schaf didn't care a wit for fame.  He cared to bowhunt and he was impossibly good at it.  I know...I hunted with him.  I have stories that would fill a book twice over.

What a man he was!  How I miss him!

I reckon God broke the bowhunter mold when he made that man!

Tyler,

There's 11 pics on that thread.....and we've got more coming.

Don't have a clue why you can't see them.......they are on the Trad Gang server.  Some people can't see Charlie Lamb's on his posts either, and they are also on the Trad Gang server....heck if I know....must be a browser setting issue.

Tell me if you can see the pics from this link.....

Hey Paul you should write a book with all the Schaf stories. I would love to read something like that. We need something in print from the "horses mouth" - so to speak -In order to pass the tradition down, we need to make sure we document the stories. I have been reading some of Teddy Roosevelt's books. They were written over 100 years ago. I am so glad he wrote those books. The animals actions and hunts he described they are still much the same today. Write the book Paul..........

Not to sound insensitive...but what took Paul from us so prematurely ? I've looked around some but never found out how he died ?

Thanks,Terry.
Was gonna say,every pic I've ever saw of him he looked like he was in remarkable shape and I knew he was fairly young so I wondered if it was some type of accident .

Tradgangers;
            For those who are interested there is a book on Schafes life in the works as we speak !
       Dave Windauer's dad , Bob Windauer is in the process of penning a book on Paul ( with Pauls families blessings).He will be contacting many of pauls friends to gather more stories , and pics of Paul moments. Bob is a terrific writer, long time friend of Schafes and i have full confidence that the book will be respectfully done and a great must needed tribute to my dear friend Paul. I still miss his friendly chuckle.

Sergio- I heard Bob talking on the phone with Hunter about writing the book last spring when I was with Hunter at Peggy's house, but didn't know Bob had started yet. It's gonna be great book!

Guys, also check out shafersilvertips.com
Dave has got a few well written pieces about Paul on the site.  I had one of my employees read a few yesterday, he is a died in the wool gun guy, and was very impressed with the stories and made the statement that he would like to read more about Paul.  I think we all would....

Good morning Tyler;
               Your right this book was a long time in coming. However the families feeling i feel should come first.To all of us Paul was a Bowhunting Icon,legend , acquaintance or friend , to the family he was a son or brother.i think that Bob is the right person to write this book in a kind , informative, respectful way. I'm sure that anyone who knows Bob wold agree.I'm sure that Bob will include chapters on Paul the person as well.
     I'm going to be in Montana probably within the next Month, visiting withe the Windauers, maybe we can hook up and exchange stories!
