Going Back to the Beginning!
« on: January 01, 2011, 08:48:00 PM »
When I first joined Trad Gang 5yrs ago, I was really excited to pursue getting my first deer/trad harvest. Somehow I got caught up in the buying and trading of all the different trad archery equipment this sport has to offer and realized that my focus had shifted. I was more into the equipment than the hunting!

Don't get me wrong, I still hunted every year and was having lots of fun but, I think I need to switch my focus back in order to loose the Wannabe1 status. This year I will no longer be buying and trading, only selling a few items I no longer need! Instead, I will be practicing and studying my foe, the Blacktail deer.     :D

My equipment will be one of two Howard Hill longbows of the same specs. I will practice with both, one primary and one backup. A back quiver and well tuned arrows tipped with 2 blade BH. I will spend as many hours as allowable (by the boss) scouting the area I plan to hunt to better know my quarry. This is my New Year resolution. Wish me luck!     :archer:

Sounds like a good plan and a nice re-focus.

Best of luck!

Easy to get caught up in the fun of traditional archery and lose focus on traditional bowhunting.  I think you are wise though to become proficient with one bow and learning all you can about the quary.  Good Luck!

You're in a pretty sweet area for CBT's, tried it three times and enjoyed the challenge.

Yep, Real easy to get caught up in all the fun. I have already gone back to the simple D bows and Doug fir arrows with a back quiver and loving every minute of it.

Good luck bud and have some fun!!  :D

Good on you.  I have said before traditional archery doesn't need anything that is described as "new, radical, improved, advanced" or that has been patented in the last 50 years.  That's new stuff.  Not traditional stuff.

Bow, string and arrow.  Can't distill out pure hunting much more than that.  Probably ought to wear some warm clothes, though.

It's a really honorable goal your trying to attain. And I wish you all the luck, it's never a good thing to lose your focus on the quarry even if it is to focus more on toys. Perhaps you could start by trying to block all trad equipment classifieds from your computer.(yeah, like that's really gonna happen)Or maybe a short stint with bowaholics anonymous.

Good Luck with your endeavor, and I hope you succeed!

Thanks everyone. To be honest, I was really burning out on trying to find that perfect setup. I am re-reading Howards Hunting the Hard Way and know I have really been missing what I was looking for. I think I've found it but, still have some learning to attain it. This site and all who are a part of it, have and will be a great help getting there.
