does any one use a release?

I know its not traditional but i blistered my fingers so bad before i ordered my shooting glove from three rivers, so instead of laying off the target shooting i figured why not. I dont plan on using a release during hunting season but untill i get my glove its the only way i can shoot every day. hope i didnt give any one a heart attack by saying the r word!

I've been shooting with a release for two years now. Don't care if I'm traditional or not. It's just a matter of necessity for me (two bone spurs in the knuckle of my ring finger).

If you continue to shoot with the release and need any help/advice, give me a shout.

When my joints give me problems I use my homemade palm tab. a non-mechanical leather release aid just like my Bateman only different.

Nothing changes as far as my anchor or how my arrows fly and hit.

There were several releases used in the 60's and 70's, do what you can to keep shooting, keep muscles toned up.

I tried a trigger release a few years ago for the heck of it.  I tied a string loop on and gave it a try.  My arrows flew terrible.  I don't know if I am correct, though it appeared the release prevented the arrows from bending around the riser (paradox???).  The arrows may have been smacking the riser an the way past.  Again, I am not sure that was what was happening.  At the time I thought a bow would need to be cut way past centershot to be able to use a release.  Anyway, give one a try.

Excellent Mudd!! A good friend of mine shoots a release due to arthritis. We went to a bow shoot and instead of asking about it the people running it made a scene like he was cheating or something. We went to shoot to practice and didn't even keep score. This made him not even want to go to any more shoots. People should use common sense and not get all fired up about what is and what isn't trad.

I think I'll just call it a palm tab.

It works just like my Bateman tab, just as quiet but it's more like shooting 3 under.

Seriously it is as quiet as shooting with my tab and I can hit with it as easily as my tab.

Arthritus in my hands so bad I can't shoot with fingers so I use a release. Better than not shooting.I don't keep score at 3-D shoots and everybody is cool when I explain its a release or nothing.  Bob

Were you shooting off the shelf or an arrow rest with the "trigger" release? I would think if you shot off an arrow rest (I do but with 3-under fingers)the release aid would work ok? The string does roll off the fingers which applies a completely different type of action to the arrow and thus a change in paradox. Paradox is present with every set-up and release style but different between set-ups, release styles, and even archers.

I read in an old archery book where someone used a release in the 1890's, I think it was.  They wouldn't let him compete in the York Round although they let him shoot.  He also had an injured hand.

I made a release similar to Mudds but I couldn’t hold the same weight with it and it put the string more lateral to my eye.  I tried a mechanical release just for the hell of it one time but it put my anchor extremely low.  I couldn’t even see my target when I shot at 20 yards with an average size sight window on my Morrison because I had to aim so low.  I’ve never tried a thumb ring but will sometime if I get the chance.  3 under works great for me.

I am surprised that many of us do use releases, I was a little embarassed to post this question thinking I might get some angry responses!  I am more used to a release because of my compound shooting in the past but plan on trying to use fingers hopefully this glove will help protect my fingers more than the work glove.

I remember target shooters in the early 70's shooting all manner of rope, spike and even a rare thumb release but nothing like Mudd's, that is really cool. I even remember a guy who used a teaspoon attached to a small block of wood. The thing about shooting is that you have to just get out and shoot and making it a fun and comfortable experience seems like the best way to keep going.

I sure would like to know how to make one of those "palm tabs" . With arthritis in my hands and tennis elbow , I may have to go to something like that before long . Black Widow used to sell something similar to that  called a strap tab . gillchaser
