Turkey Slam
« on: January 07, 2011, 05:35:00 AM »
Anyone ever get a Traditonal Turkey Slam?  Ive read it being done with a gun, how about a bow.  What would be the best state/states to attempt this?

Joey Buchanan has the Super Slam or what ever it's called. I get my slams mixed up.

He has 5 of the 6 all with his homemade bow and calls. Heckuva accomplishment!

Sounds like joebuck needs to do a build-a-long for turkey calls. Eastern, Merriams, Rio Grande, Oseola.  What's the other 2?

There's actually seven sub-species. You're forgeting the Butterball... which, by the way, are the ones I bring home the most of.  BW

I highly recommend the Goulds hunt in Mexico. They are the purest wild turkey we have since they have never interbred with our 4 sub species.Travel is tricky but there are a couple of outfitters that no the ropes.  My Goulds gobbler is my favorite mount  of my Royal Slam. Gorgeous bird and neat location where we hunted. Geronimo hid out in these very mts. Funny thing happened one morning, I bumped into a Native Mexican Indian hunting one morning.......he looked at me with my ghillii suit on and  recurve in tow and grinned...he had a rusty single barrel shotgun and a blue Give Up Suit on...I looked at him and  grinned!   that's been 4 years ago..gosh I want to go back

Wild Turkey Species There are 6 different species of the Wild Turkey: the Osceola in South Florida, Eastern in the Eastern U.S, Rio Grande in the South West, Merriam's in the Rockies and North West, Gould in Arizona, and Mexico, and the Oscellated in Central America. The NWTF show has a section with a mount of each species.

Here you go...i am partial to the butterball myself!   :)

Until the Mexican Government gets off the drug payroll I'll spend no nickels in Mexico. I've turned down training gigs in Mexico for the last three years running.

The USA now has 5 sub species with a population of Goulds established in southern AZ, Limited hunting for them

It would be nice to have that opportunity to hunt them all. I am working on my state slam(Rio Merriam, butterball) but finding a non-highfence butterball outfitter is tough.

AZ has a raffle where you can hunt 365 days per year if you draw the tag.  I believe the turkey raffle is only $5; might be a cheap way to hunt Goulds for you "bird people".

I have 11 points for turkey in AZ so I can get a Goulds.  Lost one from max as I missed one of the fall drawings because I was up in Alaska on a crummy brown bear hunt...I'd rather have my turkey point!

I believe there is a small pocket of Goulds in NM also.  Joey?

Here is what the first Royal Slam bird looked like when JoeBuck put him down, how about a picture of the mount my hero?

that's a great point Steve and Steve......AZ raffle is in effect.

Steve O ..I got him mounted just like the pic in a hang in dead mount. but I must admit. A hanging dead mount of a Griz would be more impressive.
