Interesting thread: I have tried and tried to get some to look like Osage but can't quite acheive the look I am after.

I've used some yellow spray paint but that is a whole other look.

I'll be interested in what others have used.

I used yellow leather dye on sitka spruce shafts before the clear water based finish and they looked real sharp. It does eventually fade but usually I loose or break the arrow before it fades away.Sorry no pics.  Bob

I use a water based aniline dye I get from Woodworkers Supply. It is what I use for all my staining of arrows. It comes in a lot of colors both natural and decorative. The water based dye is the most color fast (non-fading).

go to the local sherwin williams or ppg store , and tell them you want a laquer tinted with yellow/gold/and orange . have em put it into a rattle can if you dont have a sprayer.

had a buddy that did this with gunstocks , and they were just fantastic. you may need to still stain the wood , but you can get some wild clear coat .

Rit yellow dye does a great job; mix with water or alcohol.

Where can you buy Rit dye?  Is it something a hardware store, or craft store will carry?

Most grocery stores and drug stores carry it. Rit is a fabric dye.

Bjorn. Do wipe on the dye or soak the shaft? Haven't tried that yet.

I apply the dye with a foam brush and wipe it with a cloth 30 minutes later. I have dipped too, but don't like to store the dye in a dip tube because it needs a lot of shaking before use. I store the dye in an empty soda bottle.

+ on the Rit dye, the powder kind, not the liquid stuff.  mix it with alcohol & shake well.  I wipe it on with a rag.  the Golden Yellow color makes the shafts look kind of like new osage, not aged.  I tried mixing a little brown dye in with the yellow one time, the results were less than desirable

i prefer staining just the cap end with yellow aniline dye, and the main body a darker walnut ...

I have that same rug at our home that you have in your picture Rob.  I just don't have those beautiful arrows scattered all over it like yours though.

Bjorn,
I don't mean to be critical, I think the red accents are wonderful, but it's a bit inconsistent.  I recommend you keep perfecting the applicaion of that final coat.    :)

All these arrows are great.  I just started working with dye and have learned from this thread.  Thanks guys!
