Depends...  Do ya want to do a cap color?  If so just tape it off clean the shaft good with acetone and then spray a cap on.  Then do your cresting with testors enamel..  Let em dry good and then spray a water based poly over the top.  If ya use any testors "metal colors" spray lightly when you put on the first or second coats of clear.....

Good luck

Yeap what Huntschool said. I just tape off a area on my carbons. Clean with window cleaner and first coat with a primer spray then followed by my choice of color of Krylon spray. I've used testors, small bottles colors of enamel paint I've gotten from Michaels, or WM use to carry some. Do buy ya some good X small brushes if your doing fine lines. I've never top coated anything because I use fletch tape but I'd take the advice above it using glue on fletching.

LC:  I use nothing but fletch tape.. love it.. to hell with glue!

Bowhunter:  If you are working with already fletched shafts then ya can't spray em....  But if your not its easy as all get out....

OK.... So, like LC said get some testors (lots of colors to choose from) I get mine at Hobby Lobby.  They also have a great assortment of brushes.  Do not go cheap here... the long thin Sable Scripts style brush will give you some very fine lines.  Be sure and buy a big bottle of thinner for the testors.  You want a paint that "flows" off your rush.  Ya don't want motor oil....

Getting the "feel" of the brush takes a little practice.

I would still put poly over the pens.  Ya want to protect the cresting....

I just was cresting and letting the paint dry when I came across this post.  Notice the 3x5 card. It has the pattern of what I am painting. These just have the large bands and still need the fine out line. You can tape of with masking tape if you spray. Hope the picture helps.

I often use regular spray paint for cresting. Just spray a little into the cap and dip your brush in it. The spray stuff flows real well.

If you are hard up for a brush take a small section of turkey feather vane(1/8") and tie it to the end of a Qtip. Works great.
