Help on how to determine string length?
« on: January 10, 2011, 02:52:00 PM »
I have an old "Drake" recurve that was my wifes dads. he gave it to me in pretty rough shape (VERY DIRTY) looks to be really nice now that it is cleaned up. I used some 000 steel wool and sanded down the finish on the handle and used some lighter fluid and took of a lot of gunk from the limbs. It is a left hand bow and the only marking on it is the "drake" decal on the bottom limb, and the number "3100" on the left side of the riser. It measures 60&3/4 inches unstrung. I have no idea what the bow weight is (guessing 50-60#'s?)I'd like to post some pics on here for feedback~
pics may take a minute or 2!

Hey Rob, be sure and measure from the nock groove to the nock groove and follow the bow's contour......not straight from tip to tip. That will give you the actual length you need for determining string length, then subtract 3" from that measurement. That will be the length string you need.

Some guys say to subtract 4" but my experience has been that is too short. Maybe it's just my particular bow, but subtracting 4" seemed to be a bit too short and I can always get another 1/2" shorter out of it by twisting. You will need to add twist anyway to get the proper brace height.
Maybe somebody here is familiar with that particular bow and will offer some better advice than I can give, but all recurves are pretty much the same when determining string length.

You can also do a search on here for determining string length and get loads of posts about it. I see this question come up about once a week.
Just go up to the top center of this page and just to the right of where it says "My Profile" you will see the word "search"......click on that and use the search engine provided for searching the Trad Gang forum for past topics and info.

Hope that helps.

nock to nock distance is right at 60" on the nose. so I need a 57" string. If I need less I can always twist the dacron to get the right brace height correct?

That is a pretty bow, I love the riser.
When you get a string on it, let us know how she shoots.

To reinforce what's already been said, 3" taken off from AMO has alway's worked better for me.  I've tried 4 and you end up really cranking on the stringer to get it strung.

Ranger, I would ask over on the history/collector section on this bow!

Could be 3" could be 4", could be more!

When you order, don't want to have to reorder  for another string!

My Experience!
