proud trad daddy
« on: January 11, 2011, 01:17:00 AM »
i've shot trad since 78 and love it like no other thing I do. My youngest son started shooting a bow at 4. As he has grown older he just didn't want to shoot much. I started him out on a compound as I wanted him to take an interest in archery an get some confidence. He is 13 now and told me dad, this isn't fun anymore. I was devastated that this is my last son at home and he doesn't have the love of archery like I do. What he was trying to tell me is this compound just isn't doing it for me. He said he wanted to start shooting trad bows like I do. So I picked him up a recurve and he started shooting some of my arrows. The boy is good. Brings a tear to my eyes that he has made this choice on his own and we will share this love together of archery. Anyone elses son or daughter made that choice to shoot trad like you do. It's the greatest feeling in the world. Thank you Shawn Michael for making daddy proud.

Mike,
I love to hear the stories of kids following their parents in good things.  I also have had the greatest love for archery since forever....and like you I had high hopes of teaching my son Andy the finer points of hunting with trad equipment.  We will now often shoot together when he can find the time.  It's a great time together...

Great job dad!!

For me it was the other way around! I was always shooting bows from a very early age. I started with hand me down recurves and I moved then to "bows with wheels". I shot them for quite some time. In the last 9 years I have more or less stopped shooting on a reagular basis. My son will turn 9 in June and four years ago he told me he wanted a bow for christmas and this sparked my intrest back into shooting the bow. He told me he wanted a bow with out wheels. Santa brought him a nice little "bow with out wheels" and some arrows. that same year for my birthday I received my first longbow from my girlfriend.
Now my son (8), daughter(6) and my girlfriend(better not say) all shoot traditonal equipment and love every bit of it. I could not ask for anything better to have my loved ones share and enjoy this fun thing in life with me.

Congratulations to both of you.
You have every reason to be proud.
My son has given up his compound, but has yet to pick traditional.

That's cool,happy for you.
An arrow can only be shot by pulling it backward. So when life is dragging you back with difficulties, it means that it's going to launch you into something great.

I was a devout compound shooter. I just dabbled w/ a longbow. My son could care less about shooting a compound when he saw me trying to shoot trad. equipment he wanted to try it. We started going to 3D events. Then he wanted to hunt with a longbow and called me a wimp for using my compound. So I switched and have not looked back best move I have made.LCH

My boy is 12, been shooting one since he was 6 or 7. He has always shot a recurve. Tryed to get him to try other things, but he don't want to. That's fine with me, I love it when he hangs with old dad. We do alot of stumpin and shootin together.. I hope it always stays that way!! Jason
