Any Women Bowyers?
« on: January 11, 2011, 09:04:00 AM »
While I was working on a Osage stave last night in my garage my mind wanders sometimes. Especially during boring work like removing sap wood.
During my wanderings it occured to me that all Bowyers and Bowmakers that I have ran into here and there have all been men.
Are there any women out there that build bows too?

I'm sure there has to be. I'd just be curious to see their work and compare notes.

Just thinking out loud.  :wavey:

I dunno if she actually works on the bows, but Yanna Robertson just got her TradOut shop up and running.  She's part of the Stykbow crew.  She might be out in the shop too?

My wife did work with me in the shop, because of the high cost of heath insurance, she had to take a outside job.I miss working with her.Women are very good at designing.  Ron and Debbie King at Fox Archery are also husband and wife team.

That's way cool. Marriages stay together longer when they both can find a common interest and share the experiences together.

I actually think women would be quite good at bow building, mainly because they have lots of patience with meticulous tasks that take great concentration.
I know myself that I get frustrated alot and just simply have to walk away from the bow bench. Sometimes for a couple of days before I'm ready to go at it again.

:biglaugh:  That's funny, sometimes all I seem to be able to make is kindlin for the wood stove myself. So I know where your coming from.

Any female Bowyers want to weigh in on this discussion? Your more than welcome to and I'd love to see some pics of your handy work.
Everybody loves to see pictures!

That comes from years of practice with their "significant" others.    ;)

Connie Westvang made a hatchet bow for MOJAM a few years back.  I think she won the contest with it.

Dorothy Lidstrom (now just retired) built bows for Chek-mate Archery right along side Larry Courchine for over 35 years could handle any process in the buisness.Chek-mate turned out thousands of bows in that time.I believe in 1964 she was the womens World FITA champion.I've seen her shoot a recurve at 90 meters, she was scary.
Quote from Howard Hill.( Whenever he taught someone to shoot) "Son make up your mind right now if you want to target shoot or hunt as theres a world of differance between the two"

I believe that the whole TerMaat family is involved with the RER bows and Sue does alot of the final sanding. Good people.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.
