My new (to me) Shrew
« on: January 21, 2011, 07:42:00 AM »
I am a stringwalker for competion, but I just love short trad recurves for the pure fun of shooting... I have a Hollenbeck at 56" and a Redwing hunter at 52" a real hoot to shoot... the hollenbeck would make a great hunting bow, but as I have to travel overseas to hunt it is not so practical when it comes to baggage... would be great if it was a takedown...
Ronny (Margly on here) is even more of a bowaholic than me and recently acquired a Super Shrew Scout Lil' Favorite at 56" 50# at 28" but he found out that he really didnt like drawing that short little bow to 31"  so we did a little swap last night.... my Border 19" ILF riser for the Shrew.. ( I have plenty of Border stuff and more will there be so no worries there )

It has the bow bolt take down system which is just amazingly simple and 110% rock solid...
The draw is surprisingly smooth for such a short bow, with no hint of stack all the way to my 29.5" draw.... My bow scale has gone walkabout but I am guessing I am gaining 3# with that 1.5" extra draw... will weigh her when my new scale arrives...
Speed... fast enough! my chrono seems to be playing up, but a 650 grain arrow is showing 150, but it feels faster... will have to check on another chrono when I get the chance. it feels more like 160... when I punch my details into steves calculator I get 170, so I dont think 160 is too far off the mark....
Done a little tuning and so far a 500 spine beman mfx with 50grain inserts and 300 grain points are flying straight and grouping well... big nanook broadheads are flying straight and grouping with the field points...

This bow will definitely be in my pack for my next hunting trip, along with my DAS with heavy Border limbs...
anyhow... on to the gratuitous bow p*rn!

The grip is rather special.. I normally like high wrist grips, but this just fits my hand like a glove and the thumb rest is just spot on!

The bow bolt system is great too...  the two halves are shorter than my arrows!
A simple twist is all that is needed...

Awesome. Very nice bow! I love the bow bolt system and it's nice to have the 2 halves shorter than your arrows mine fits in my arrow carry case with nearly a dozen arrows and extra strings and such.

Nice bow.  Maybe someday.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

Nathan: Glad too hear you like your new Shrew. You will love it more and more as you shoot it. They are an awesome shooting Bow, they handle an arrow with authority. I have 2 Shrews,  60" 53# @ 28" and 54" 60# @ 28", love them both but the 60# is getting a little heavy for me lately. Getting older. Good luck, enjoy Don

Great looking bow and the bolt takedown system looks foolproof! Thanks for all the specs on your arrows, weights, points and arrow speed. It is interesting to see what others shoot and how well it performs. Best of luck hunting.

I got three shrew long bows. Sure would like to shoot one of their recurves. Bet it's a kick.
