I like 600.You need to double lung em,as they are tough animals that have an incredible instinct to suvive.Id like to see you get your weight up to 550 anyway.Once again also, and I only know this from Tradgang here, but when it comes to arrows, anything Bjorn says is right on!Mr.Stefano is expert too.

Only killed one - a mature cow. 450gr worked great and I would use it again.

I never knew about FOC till now, Thanks! I am at 19% FOC. Did I read wrong or don't you want the FOC to be lower for better penetration.

Last thread on this subject, a good point was made for arrows <600gr for bows in the low to mid #50's! Ive made up 2 doz arrows that i plan to use for everything this year, and it goes like this...KK German Mountain Pine arrows that i soaked in Watco for 6 days, then a few hand rubbed coats of spar urethane, fletch, and a 160gr tip! They came out to 675-685gr with about 13.somethin' FOC! Should be a bonafide killer outta my #55 Bear Montana longbow! Love threads like this as its goin to be my first elk hunt this year!

will a 125 gr head be sufficient to take these animals?

Im sure a 125gr head has killed several thousand elk, but usually with a heavy arrow comes a heavy head!

liv2hunt - Studies show that measureable pentetration gains start at 19% FOC. FOC increase above 19% doesn't not appear to have a linear relationship.

For ex. - each 1% gain above 19% up to ~25%, may yield up to ~5% increase in penetration where as each 1% gain over 19% to ~32% Ultra-EFOC may yield up to an ~7% gain. This information is still being further evaluated.

What appears quite visible is as FOC continues to increase above 19% the pentration increase percentage is increasing at an increasing higher rate.

Friend, thanks for the info! I am new to trad and trying to gain info. much appreciated!

Even though there are few on this site who "think" they are superior to us that are trying to learn. They must realize that we are all in fact equal and will be judged in the end. My days on this site are finished, as for I am only trying to gather information on bare bows to better myself and my two sons. The administration of this site does not like my threads and I can feel free to speak elsewhere. I thought this would be a good place to learn. I should have listen to others when I was told that this site does not offer one a chance. To all those members good luck and farewell. To the others, you will be judged and I wish you luck.

What's the deal with this? I believe I read every post on this thread and didn't see anything to warrant an attitude like this.

Stating that a thread is a dead horse and has been beat to death sounds like a negative comment to me, and believe me I have heard my share of negative comments.

The guy asking the question is new and trying to learn the ins and out of traditional archery, give him a break admin.

I must say I'm not surprised.
Really is a shame to push away a newby with the typical elitist attitude we trad guys get accused of so much. I guess theres some truth to it. Sad. Oh well liv2hunt your in good company.
Alot of good fellas here, sad theres a few that are rude. Thats life I suppose.

Before everyone starts judging the admin click on Liv2 hunts name and read his profile. Attitude is super negative. Sometimes we do not see everything that is said or done./

CA BOWHUNTER,
Check a few threads back, liv2hunts response is based on another thread just to clarify.
I don't suppose he thinks it's beating a dead horse.
Sorta like a baby asking how to walk and you tell him to shut up.
Possibly just lost a new trad hunter to arrogance.

What's his profile have to do with how is legitament question was answered. If his profile is an issue shouldn't that be dealt with through PM. I see nothing he's posted as negative or offensive.
Come on.

Name: nonyabusiness, That is a terrible attitude. It has nothing to do with this thread . However it has everything to do with respect to the forum and the people on this forum. I did not say it is why . Maybe he is a bit thin skinned though.

From what we can read on this thread he got respectful and thorough answers to his questions. If he has a problem on another thread or even another forum, perhaps it should stay there since it has nothing to do with this one. I also highly doubt what happens on this or any other forum will effect whether or not someone is or becomes a trad archer. If so then they are doing it for the wrong reasons.JMHO.

My point is I was feeling kind of sympathetic until I checked to see what his name was and where he lived. Not now.

God Bless you all Steve
