I hunted them in Australia, they were more jumpy and wired for sound than the Impala in Africa were.  I never even got a shot when trying to stalk and also sit in ground blinds.  My good friend that was with me and shooting a Mathews at about 280 fps had 3 of them turn inside out and be gone before his arrow got there at ranges from about 27 to 40 yards.  It can be done though.  We were hunting with Bill Baker on Toomba station and he had gotten quite a few over the years hunting on the ground with a longbow and recurve. There are several of the gang from downunder that have got them also.  Definetly graduate level stalking!

I have been running guided hunts for these critters for a number of years now and have found them to be one of the hardest targets to take. As our skills have improved I have been able to get success rate to over 80% in the past coupe of years and 100% to date this year for clients.

You must have a very quiet bow and even quieter arrows and this can be very difficult with Trad gear but not impossible. They have the ability to hear the arrow and still have enough time to get well away before the arrow gets there and seeing in slow motion on video is just amazing.

I have managed to take 12 with the recurve and 1 with the Longbow but this is over 12 years.

I have heard that the Axis Deer in America are nearly all behind wire so can't comment on how they react there. We have some Game farms but nearly all bowhunted Axis here are hunted free range.

We utilise some tree stands but mainly spot & stalk.

Hope this helps in some way.

Cheers
Mick
