New Hot Melt Glue
« on: February 02, 2011, 02:01:00 PM »
I was reading a thread by David Janssen about what size carbon to use with his shrew. Amar911 made a long post and in it he mentioned that Big Jim had some new hot melt. I was wondering if anyone has tried it. I know they now have super hot glue guns you can buy that you can glue wood to concrete and it holds as good as construction adhesive. But you have to buy the new glue sticks for it to work. I saw the guns down at a carpet layer supply store. Has anyone with personal experience tried the new glue sticks for broadheads and field points? I already use hot melt for my points but if there is something even stronger that is removable I think it would be great. Gary

Sounds like good stuff. Hope someone has some experience with it and will chime in.

A friend and I where talking about the very same thing the other day. I bought a stick from BigJim, the last time I was down that way, but so far I have only looked at it several times. He says it works, so I figure I'll give it a try before too long.

We carry a special low temp hot melt as well, it works very well even on carbons and it doesn't get brittle like Ferr-L-Tite will.  It's called Super 735, I'm not familiar with what Big Jim is carrying but if he says it works I reckon it does.

Yes I do use it got it from Big Jim at compton last year. It stays for lack of a better word pliable when it cools. The old hot melt gets hard which can make it brittle. Have not had any inserts come loose.

Dean,

Are you using it on inserts in carbon arrows?

What I have is nothing new. The other guys are selling it and using it too. I'm just proclaiming its effectiveness. Yes, I have pulled out two inserts out of a 100 plus, but I have truly tested them and I can't say that I took the proper time or effort to put those in. My personal stuff gets thrown together in a  hurry (not my own bows though  :) ).

As far as time, it only takes seconds and you can shoot them in 5 minuets or less if it is cool outside. You can remove them even quicker.

I have a  U tube video of me showing how simple the glue is to use. I have another showing me trying to pull them out of a tree after I shot them there with my 82lb bow. I did pull one out, but busted my arse in the process. It is funny and I'll have it on my web site soon. I don't know how to post it or I would have it here too. If someone knows how to do that, feel free to add it although it makes me look like one of the stooges!
Yes Lechwe, on carbon arrows especially and I never, never clean the shafts any more. Just think how good it could be if I cleaned the shafts.

I am not sure about the Bohnning Holt melt being brittle and will continue to use it as I have not had trouble with in nearly 50 years. I just see no reason to try any new stuf if my points come off its with a pc of shaft behind it. If I need to turn and reset - simple .

I got on Big Jim's site and found the glue.  It's the Quick Stick.  Good stuff; I've been using it for a few years now and like it a lot.  Less costly than Ferr-l-tite, too.

Again, this stuff should work on any shafts, but the remarkable thing is that it works so much better on carbons than anything I've used.

So, do you need a hot glue gun or will a candle or alcohol burner work just fine?

This stuff I was talking about may be different. I know the gun that applies it gets way hotter than an ordinary glue gun. So it may not be good for carbons. I thought maybe the stuff Big Jim carries was the same but maybe not. Anyway it sounds like I might be the first to see how it works with arrows. I will post and let you all know how it works. Gary

An alcohol burner works great with the Quick Stick, don't know about the stuff Gary is alking about.

Not fond of a candle for hot melts, too much soot.

I use a small propane torch, but have used a lighter in a pinch. It cools rather quickly so it is nice to have both hands free to work with. I stick a shaft in the back of the block for a handle. I then heat up and roll the ends of each insert in the melted glue. A little goes a long way. Once all the inserts have glue, I can set the stick aside and reheat each insert one at a time and stick them in there prospective shaft.
I also usually allow them to cool for a minute or so before removing the excess.
I am meerly guessing mind you, but I would say that we have done ove 30 doz with a block. I have had employees use up a block on less than 20 dz too, but they had such a pile of wasted glue that we could have cleaned up and made most of another block out of it.

I use the Quick Stick to glue points on wood arrows so use more per tip than carbon inserts and get enuf that it isn't worth counting.  I generally use a propane torch, too, but will often use the alcohol burner with broadheads.

Do any of you use this on screw-in field tips? I usually use some string wax so they don't unscrew when target shooting. But they still work loose. Maybe the hot melt would be a better choice.

I just got some Quick Stick from Jim earlier in the week.  Put on 4 inserts and tried to pull them out by tieing some butchers string behind the target points and to a door knob.  I broke the string (doubled) and the inserts didn't move.  Sure is easier and less messy than the epoxy I had been using.  Looks like a winner to me.

Snag you could use this for your target points but you would have to heat them up to get them back out of the inserts.  Probably not the best application.

Here's Big Jim's youtube video. I thought he was going to pull a pine tree down.

All I saw was the process of how he uses it. Good video but no tree pulling.
