Our equipment?
« on: February 02, 2011, 07:16:00 PM »
3 of us have been shooting till our hearts content every day for over a month now gettin ready for our bivy elk hunt, and also shooting out of popups for the upcoming turkey season! We have all beefed up our setups from previous years, and i just wanted to to see what you guys thought! Im using my trusty Bear Montana #55@28", its a little tweaked with modified tips and TS1 string! Im shooting arrows in the 675-685gr range, and am loving how the bow is whisper quiet! Im currently shooting the Ace Express 165 broad head and love it! One of the other guys is using his standby Great Northern D bow, #62@29", and hes shooting aroung 650gr arrows with VPA terminators! Lastly is our buddy recovering from shoulder surgery, hes been shooting a BW recurve thats #47@28", hes shooting Laminated Birch shafts with 160gr Stos heads, and hes drilling out to 30yds, as we all are! kinda funny watching the arrow in flight, but its tuned properly, and should work fine! Any input?

Sounds like you are all doing pretty good and focused on spring and fall.  I like your choices of broadheads.  The Ace Express has been in my quiver for many years and the VPA's for two.  The STOS is right up there, too.

All your set-ups sound to be great, your friend with the BW is on the low end. But I have shot Elk with a 48# @ 28" LB using 160gr grizzlys. Full pass through at 22yds. Keep up the practice, Good Hunting Don

We are all shooting wooden arrows, the laminated birch with the 160gr STOS weigh around 720gr! We do "Crude" penetration tests with carpet, buffalo board, and cardboard, and he seems to do well! I dont know, its a freightrain thats for sure,  goin around 150fps or so id guess, maybe a tad faster! Hes kinda worried about it, but i believe he will be ok!

Believe ive read stories on here of guys shooting elk with lighter weight bows in the #48-#52 range and very heavy arrows! Hes a good shot, i keep telling him a slow hits better than a fast miss!!!
