Removing glue from carbon shaft
« on: February 04, 2011, 12:19:00 AM »
I want to refletch some arrows that somebody glued feathers to...
Anybody found a good product or technique to remove glue from a carbon shaft without damage to the shaft?
I have some shafts that are not bare carbon, they have a finish on them like that on a fly rod, smooth, shiny, durable, but I am not sure as to how chemical resilient it might be.
Ideas?

hi traildog
you ought to move this thread over to powwow, this is the classified. the below link is 1 of 3 using the search engine here using "fletch glue removal". you may lose the shine, but you can go back on with wraps if you do.

Take a dull knife and scrape them clean it won't bother the finish at all. Once done then take some alcohol and wipe them off before refletching

I just do it carefully and take my time, after I get the feathers or vanes off,I like to use arrow wraps on carbon arrows. They make it so much easier to redo them later without having to scrape them off.

Carbon can be tricky to glue up fletchings to well.  Scrape well with a knife(not a extremely sharp knife) lightly sand with fine sandpaper, then clean them with denatured alcohol.  Make sure shafts are dry and start fletching.  You might try super glue made by loctite it works well!

FYI,  I've had super glue be quite brittle on MFX shafts.  Everything goes well until all of the sudden the feathers start coming off.  Works well on standard black finished shafts.
