Minwax Oil Based Wipe-on Poly
« on: February 10, 2011, 09:19:00 AM »
Does using Minwax oil based wipe-on poly result in target burn on arrows when used in 3-D targets?

i've never ever had a problem with any polyu offering "target burn" in any kinda butt material.

some finishes are 'harder' than others and therefore feel 'slicker' and not 'sticky'.

I haven't used the oil base polly on arrows but the water base will have target burn, or all mine do.

related question for Rob, I really learned a lot from your recent how-to on arrows, great job, thanks. If I get the oil base wipe-on poly, can I use it OVER some arrows I have already finished with water base poly? I searched for 30 minutes for this becasue I think I have seen it on some thread, but I could not find it. Sorry for hijacking this REM, but I get target burn with this water base poly finish, and I want to know if it is worth going over them with oil-base poly.

If you are worried about burn(never had it) then spray the front 6" with pure silicone and it will keep it from burning.

Trying to healp JEJ
As a Minwax  dealer for longer than I wish to admit, I would not put oil base poly over water based. Adhesion would be questionable and, while it might not burn when hitting a target, it probably would peel unevenly.

Graybeard, no need to admit how long, your name says it all!  ;)

That is exactly what I needed to hear. I will not put the oil base poly over the water base, thanks very much for your advice. Think I'll steel wool off the 3-d target burn, wipe on a few more coats of water base, and then try what lpcjon2 said with the spray silicone. These 3-d critters sure seem to resent being poked with water base poly arrows.    :archer2:
