Florida Hog Help for New Guy

Just ordered a new custom longbow from Maddog Archery. Wondering where to go to hunters hog with longbow in Florida. Where? and what distance are you normally shooting from? What size group do you need to shoot. 6-8"???I want to find a place in Florida that I can hunt. I live in Miami and don't want to travel out of state. Don't mind paying. Just not a place that is going to pretty much tie the hog to a tree. Or a "guarantee kill". I want a place that is fair chase. Spot and stalk. First time hunting anything...other then fish. All advise welcome and needed.

Hook up with an experienced Hog hunter if you can. This will help you to have a successful and safe hunt. Join a local club and get to know some of the folks, they will be able to help you out also and you may be able to find someone to hunt with that knows the ropes.

There are many hog hunts available around Lake Ochachobee (I know I mis-spelled it).  Just do a google search "hunting pigs in South Florida."  Big Cypruss WMA is also loaded with pigs.  Ditto on what Gregg said - come shoot with us on March 4-6.

What distances are normal for hog hunting? and what size group to I need to hold when shooting at my target to ready(6-8 ")group??

I haven't hunted in Florida, you should get shots inside 20 yards.Maybe 10 yards.

Don't think so much in shooting groups as to what can you do with one shot under nervous pressure.
Concentrate on a tiny spot for that one shot and you'll be alright.

Most of the shots I've taken on hogs have been 12 yards or less. Usually, guides(archery) will place stands about 10 yards from where they expect the hogs to be.I would concentrate on making ONE good shot and not worry about groups.
PM me if you want some specific places to hunt hogs(I do a lot of it).I also live in Miama.

Make sure you look at the thread at the top of this section ( Pow Wow ) on Animal Shot Placement since the kill zone on a hog is a lot different then a deer. With spot and stalk you should be able to get to within 15 yards.

Thanks guys I called archery Outfitters, the guys is nice and very welcoming of a new guy that has never hunted before. He answered alot of questions for me. My maddog bow will not be ready for another 12 weeks or so. Then in the summmer is spearfishing time. So it is going to be Oct or Nov before I can go. Ready looking foward to it. So for now I will keep practicing with my wife's longbow.

At Archery Outfitters the feeders are all set up for a 20 yd. shot.  Of course, spot and stalk is a different story.  Make sure and ask about the abundance of acorns on the property before the hunt.  Went Dec 4,5&6 and 13 of us got skunked.  The acorns were so abundant that the pigs would not move from their bedding areas.  You could hear them and smell them but they would not venture into the open.  However, that is not Nickie's fault.  He cannot control the acorns.  What is he promises is an excellent hunt and experience - not a guaranteed hog; and that's the way it should be.

The only other thing that a friend commented on, that hunts, is that you can only shoot males. He said that the males taste bad and to try and find a place that lets you shoot females. Is this true.

Rick, this year was a banner year for acorns here in Florida..there are still some dropping here in Ocala. We also had some trouble with the hogs and deer this year due to the abundance of acorns at our lease. About 4 years ago was the last time we had a ton of acorns.
I have eaten plenty of male hogs (boar hogs), 98% of them were fine eating,had a couple of big ones that I had to make into sausage, I try to shoot ones under 100 pounds.
