"Swamp Dog and Longbow Leo"

Swamp Dog was a mean 'ole hog
Roaming the back woods of Louisiana
Many a Trad hunter had tried and that many had cried
All the way from Montana down too Savanna

He was the King 'O the South with a big 'ole mouth
And tusks sharper than a butcher knife
Get in his way and he'd run you down
Then try to gouge out your pathetic human life

Battle scarred from head to toe
With red in his beady little eyes
He'd make the hair on your neck
Stand clean up in the back
With his blood curdling squeally little cries

Some say he was older than the Cypress itself
But, no one really knew it for sure
They just knew, he was the meanest hog around
And nothing could be any truer

Well, Longbow Leo came from Del Rio
A little town, down there in south Texas
He wanted a shot at the 'Ole Swamp Dog
So he bid fare thee well to his Mrs

With a back quiver full of arrows and longbow in hand
He set off with will and determination
To find that fabled, crusty beast of a hog
And see to its final extermination

He hunted hard and he hunted far
Deeper into no mans land
The swamp grew murky, dreary and dark
And the evening hour was close at hand

Not knowing why but, Leo turned to his left
And witnessed a Gosh aweful sight
There bearing down was the 'Ole Swamp Dog
And he had Leo dead in his sight

Up came the bow...twang went the string
The arrow flew true to its mark
'Ole Swamp Dog let out the most harrowing squeal
As the shaft peirced clean to his heart

Yet with fire and hatred, onward he came
And pounced upon Longbow Leo
Who in his minds eye, knew he was gonna die
And wished he was back in Del Rio

With a muddy water splash, it was over in a flash
The two bodies lie motionless in the swamp
And on a cold dark night, when the moon shines bright
If you listen close...
You might see the ghosts
Of 'Ole Swamp Dog and Longbow Leo
Clutched together in a death grip, performing their battle romp

Yeah, excellent talent....I think Longbow Leo is actually from Illinois and not Texas, but then that wouldn't rhyme with Del Rio.  ;)

Characters in this poem are strictly fictitious and were not meant to resemble any real person, past, present or future. I had no idea there was someone with the Longbow Leo title already!   :D
