Spray Paint instead of Dipping
« on: June 12, 2007, 08:56:00 PM »
Just got done staining a dozen cedars.  I normally dip in paint.  Person I am making them for asked if I could do white.  I don't have white in paint but have lots of white spray paint.  Can I just spray a coat on arrow ends over the stain then finish with 2 or 3 coats of poly or does the spray paint method look cheesy?

I spray all my arrows (both cedar and carbon) with white lacquer and then crest. I finish with clear lacquer before fletching.

I've spray painted a bunch.....and even tiger strip, zebra strip, lattice, and flames by using masking tape....spray and peel off the tape when it dries....then seal with poly.

I'll see if I can dig up a few and take a pic for ya.

I've been capping and cresting mine with spray paint for longer than I can remember. My grandfather was doing his arrow that way long before I was born.

I spray paint all of mine. I use electrical
tape to tape off and paint away. I then crest
and use water base poly over the cresting.

If one wanted to do this to aluminum arrows, would they need to be sealed with poly, or something else, or would they need to be sealed at all (paint only)?  Thanks, Paul.

Wow...after seeing those arrow pictures I am convinced!  Thanks for all the imput everyone.  Can I just use regular white spray paint or do I need some special formulation?  Do you guys do one coat or more than one?  Do you just hang em upside down and let the excess drip off the nock end of the shaft?  Thanks for the input

Not any old paint. I use lacquer. Not acrylic.

I use semi-gloss white Krylon. I tape off with electrical tape and then spray 3 light coats. Then I fletch right over it. Haven't had any problems yet.

i've been using spray for the past 5 years. i usually do several light coats. i have had problems with the paint running and pooling where the tape is wrapped so i now do 3-4 light coats waiting long enough between coats for the paint to dry to the touch. like Dale i like the krylon. most of the time i will seal with the clear coat, but i have some that i never put anything over and they still look good.

I use laquer spray paint as well.I put tape on a piece of news paper letting it hang half off the paper to wrap around my shaft, this eliminates over spray. This has worked for me.I have never had a problem with fletching coming loose.I also use fletchng tape exclusively.

I use the epoxy appliance paint in a can for my cresting, holds up great and gives nice high gloss finish.

I used alot of deiffent types of spray paint with excellant results.Even dollor store 1$er a can stuff works fine.I use a small piece of PVC pipe and cut it to about 22 inches or so and plug the bottom and put the arrow in the pipe and spray it.Its hassle free and you dont need to use tape and it will serve you forever.Cheap too.I finish with wipe on poly and have never had the paint have a bad reaction with it.not sure about other finishes

KRYLON LACQUER IS THE TICKET>  Seal them first them mask off the bottom of the arrow where you want the crown dip to stop.  Three light coats of that spray on lacquer and they are perfect.  Use light coats and dont try to cover it all at once or you could get bubbles and runs in the finish.  Then a clear coat of spray on lacquer and you are ready to roll.  Thats what I use these days,.
