HOW OLD / STILL HUNTING
«
on:

JUST WATCHED ESSENTIAL ENCOUNTERS AND BARRY AFTER DRAGING OUT A DEER MADE A STATEMENT NOT BAD FOR A 65 YEAR OLD MAN AND I GOT TO THINKING I AM IN MY MID 50'S AND WAS WONDERING HOW LONG I COULD LOOK FORWARD TO DOING THIS BOW HUNTING THING THAT I LOVE SO MUCH. SO MY QUESTION TO ALL IS HOW OLD ARE YOU AND WHAT ANIMALS DO YOU HUNT. DO YOU STILL GO INTO REMOTE AREAS ON FOOT. ALSO WHAT DO YOU DO TO KEEP IN SHAPE TO ALLOW YOURSELF TO KEEP DOING YOUR HUNTS / CAMPING.
THANKS TO ALL !

I am only 46 and plan on hunting and dragging out my deer in to my 80's! I have a bud who is 78 and still shoots 68#s and hunts Colorado,Illinois and NY every year and his hunts in Colorado are very remote and he packs in and out on foot unless he shoots an elk than he goes gets horses. Shawn

I am 61 , hunt deer and moose mostly in the bush and open farm land in East Central Alberta. I walk for a couple of miles each day up and down Range Road, and exercise each day push ups and such. Of course there are chores around the yard. My shop(old barn) is 100 yards from the house , many trips back and forth a day. I do all things around the yard(exercise) based on my hunting ! Hopefully for many years to come!

I'm only 55 and I love getting into the back country alone. I don't like dragging game very far, though, so I keep a pack frame handy. I walk about 15 miles a week and lift weights to keep in shape.

I know of guys who hunt in their nineties and personally know guys who hunt and drag stuff out in their eighties. I am 66 and looking forward to some great hunting years, and helping fifty year olds pack out their kill.

I am 69 as of this month and still look forward to the fall hunts. I have to admit I do not hunt as hard as I once did. If I want to sleep in some mornings I do, but I always make it out for the evening hunt. There are times when I just set and watch the deer and other critters walk buy and enjoy their beauty. I’m not a trophy hunter so I must be getting lazy in my latter years.

I'm 67, older than Barry, and dragging a deer that large is not easy. I don't know if he hunts alone but a drag like that could be a recipe for a heart attack.
I go the the gym 2-3X/week, walk, and tend my 6 acres to keep in shape.

I'm 72 and still hunting like I've always done. Put in a lot of days during 2010 hunting season. March 05,'10 had to have one stint put in my L.A.D. artery. After 45 days (3 days/wk,)of rehab my cadiologist said I was "Good to Go" again. I walk and shoot every day and use an exercise routine I picked up in rehab every other day. I ran every day up to 2004 until my doctor said my knees wouldn't take it so I switched to walking and mt. bikes. I also do lite wt. rep's with weights. I'm 5'11" and weigh 173#s. Most of my bows are 54# to 56# I'm thankful to the Lord I've been blessed to be able to keep doing it!

I will be pushing 65 here in a bit. I still hunt as hard as I can. Can't do the drag thing like I once did but so what. As long as the ticker and its support hold out I am good to go..
I cant do altitude any longer so late life elk and sheep hunts are out...LOL... However I am still thinking hard about moose and a Canada bear hunt thing...

I'll be 75 on Mar 22nd (2 weeks) I look forward to deer camp in the U P every fall and also hunt the family farm a lot. Rabbit hunting in the winter, turkeys in the spring. I probably won't be hunting the western mountains any more but there's a lot to hunt right close to home. I'll probably keep hunting until they throw dirt in my face...

64. I still hunt elk, but luckily (I guess), I haven't had to pack one out in a while. I hike a bunch, mountain bike a bunch, and lift weights, but packing an elk off a mountain might be a challenge nowadays.
I love hunting deer and turkeys, and I will be hunting hogs at the end of this month. As long as I can hike the mountains, I will keep at it. When I can't do that anymore, whitetails live in a lot more forgiving country.

Doing stress tests everyday I get to see firsthand what happens when people are inactive and don't watch what they eat. Serious hunters, especially bowhunters, tend to be some of the most amazing treadmill tests (in a good way). I am only 40, but the ability to hunt the way I want to hunt is my biggest motivator when it comes to staying in shape. Reading the previous posts, I am hopeful that it will motivate me for many years to come.

You guys are an inspiration.
I'm only 48, and due to military service my hunting opportunities have been somewhat limited. Looking forward to retirement and many years of hunting to come, out there in my 70's just like some of you.
