Tomorrow Chis and I are headed out to harvest some Multi-Flora rose for some primitive shafts. Gonna make an afternoon of it shooting our bows(light bow for me)and looking for some nice straight shoots for shafts! Should be fun, gonna grab some extra so if anyone wants to try a few let me know, I can ship them out to ya for cost of shipping!! Shawn

Shawn,

where the heck are you gonna find any Multi-Flora rose bushes?    :readit:

With all the rain we had today, you should keep an eye out for Shed antlers too.

Have fun Guys.!  If you find my pruners let me know.
Relax,

I am sure I dont have to tell you guys this but wear welding gloves and actually to get into the center of a good M Rose ya might want a welders apron, chaps and hood.... LOL

We just use Tordon or a heavy solution of CrossBow on em out here and then shread em with a heavy brush cutter....

Really looking forward to it , Shawn. I love rose arrows. They're heavy and durable, just never been able to find a large enough source around my home. I think Shawn'll have that covered. I like to think of it as getting back at all those throns during the JLMBH. Can't wait buddy...

Make sure you cut them plenty thick...... they shrink like a SOB.

Also, leave them long.  Then, just slide then back and forth on your spine tester until they're where you want them.  Use the taper to make the spine you want.

Keith,

I know...that shrinking factor has really bit me in the butt on many occassions. I need the base to be at least somewhere between 7/16" to 1/2" for them to make servicable shafts for my 60 pound bows.

Just to let everyone know how heavy they are, I've got two shafts I'm turning into arrows right now. As luck would have it, they turned out weighing the EXACT same. 635 grains for a 31 inch shaft. Now that's hefty...

If you need some I know where there about two acres of it.  You'll likely have to peel a few years worth of my hide off it from where I've been bunny hunting.

Although I have never harvested or made any Rose arrows myself I was fortunate enough to have friend & TG member Ted Fry give me a Rose arrow he made with Stone head he knapped and I was lucky enough to arrow a P&Y Black Bear with it,arrow it still intact !! It flew great out of my self-bow.Need to make some of them myself sometime !!
Have fun guys on the Rose Bush collection.

Good to see you back up and heading out Shaun. Also good to see ya back posting again. Have a good time. I think we are heading out to look for some sheds. I'll inadvertantly be in some multi-flora myself! Good luck.

We won't get all that bloody!! We will cut our way and in and out!! Gonna try in rabbit valley first and see what we find in there. Plenty around here, I mean hundreds of acres in over 4 spots that I hunt. We hopefully find the stuff Chris needs, I have never tried it myself! Shawn

Well,we are back and hardly drew any blood!! Chris and I had a great time and we shot some and even got a few pics. Turned out we ended up with 4 dozen shafts and could of been a lot more! Nice day to be in the woods and I survived!! Shawn

Heck, our fearless leader isn't just surviving, he seems to be thriving. If he's hurtin', I'm just not seeing it...

This was a photo of Shawn after he set some balloons up along the rabbit valley and we shot our way back. Good times. Heck, he has major surgery and I still can't outshoot him...
