Damon Howatt Monterey, A True Classic Beauty!
« on: March 12, 2011, 02:38:00 PM »
Got a 1967 Damon Howatt Monterey. It is 62", 42# @ 28". I got this bow for some shoulder rehab and it is just a beauty. Some minor cosmetics but, overall a real sweetheart of a looker. The grip is one of the nicest I've ever laid my mits around!

Had a "pre Super" Diablo and a HI-Speed from the same era.or close, a few years earlier,....those bows are sculptured works of working ART......!

The deeper dish "cut out" of the riser on the side facing you and the highly angled sculpturing of the lower riser too, makes them oh so noticable and shoot? ooooooooooh yeah.

Dont know if its the long, long riser coupled with the short limbs but the two I had were screaming meemies lb pre lb.

Congrats!.......you may have found the bow you didnt know you were looking for......to shoot or hunt with.

Id take that weight in one to hunt .......anytime, no worries.

Almost seems a shame to take em to the woods but danged if they dont do their part and then some IMHO.

Sweet!

IMAGINE that wood and workmanship in a custom bow made TODAY........and the cost.

Enough said.

God Bless

Thanks Steve. At my 29" she'll be around 45# and I have no problems taking her to the woods. If my shoulder doesn't build back up to my 53# Canebrake, I'll be using this one most likely.

That is a real beauty. I have owned 3 Damon Howatts and still have two. My favorite is a 1972 Hunter 62" and 40# @28"...what a shooter! Congratulations.

Beautiful bow. I'm doing a re-finish job on a Hi-Speed right now.

Wow!  I love the wood in that bow!  I know you've seen pics of my Super Diablo, and I'm loving that bow.  But I'm on the lookout for a Monterey now - just love those old D-H's!

TW, man you got a beauty for sure! A friend of mine had one like yours with the curved sight window that was covered with green paint for the last 30+ years. I stripped it down and refinished it. The rosewood got a deep dark red and looked fantastic. It doesn't hurt that they shoot as good as they look.

Great find!

In my opinion that is about as nice a 1-piece recurve bow as there is.

I sold this one to a friend just getting started in archery.  It was 33# @ 28". They are very fast bows.

Thanks everyone! Can anyone tell me where to measure the brace? Deepest part of grip or edge of shelf?

Outstanding! Thanks guys. I sent Josh(Oliverstacy) a PM for a new string. The bow didn't come with one and I just threw that old one on for pic purposes.

Deepest part of the grip . I own a DH(Martin)Bamboo Viper & a DH Dream Catcher . These bows are as close as you can get to a top quality custom made Bow w/o paying 50-100% more . Performance - 1.Stable 2.Speed. Grip it . How does it feel in your hand . What's the difference in arrow speed between the viper & dream cather & say a comparable Black Widow Bow ? Is there a better looking 1pc recurve than the Dream Catcher ?  I hope to see more threads about Damon Howat Bows .
