Heading down to South TX for the turkey opener...
« on: March 12, 2011, 11:42:00 PM »
Father in law just called and it's ON. Fri-Mon. Gonna run my 50# Widow Osage longbow and my ghillie suit. Hopefully some hogs or javelinas will wander by as well...

Wish me luck. Never hunted birds with a bow. The ghillie should do the trick though.

Any tips?

Good luck.  May you hear many gobbles as the sky and world awakens.  Nothing grander in the world!
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

I've got Danner Pronghorn GTXs for turkey season, and oddly enough in 30 years of hunting, never seen "'ol no shoulders" a single time, if you can believe that. I've seen one my entire life here in TX (not counting a year in DC and a year in San Fran), in 5th grade while dove hunting in the central TX hill country that was 6' long. My buddy shot and skinned it. I still have photos if ya wanna see 'em.

Thanks for the heads up though. I will be hunting with a diamondback skinned Osage longbow though.....good mojo...

Best luck HF. Hunted Yorktown just east of Goliad 20+ years on 1000 unspoiled acres filled w/mesquite & other Smith Creek hardwoods. Spolied me w/big deer, too many turkeys, javes, hogs, quail, dove, & more than our share of rattlers. Get some pix.

Buddy, ain't that the truth! We are kicking ourselves for not buying a ranch out there in the early 90s......we shall see how it goes down, with me nursing a back injury from early December and not shooting a ton. I will bring a Flip HD video cam though.

Alex,

I hunt in Goliad, Texas, and the turkeys look real good this year.  During the deer season I saw a group of about 50, which was strange because I usually see groups of only 15-25.  Of course seeing and killing are two totally different things which I'm sure you will agree.

Good luck on your hunt as it looks to be a good one.

Used my ghillie suit at the feeder and had yearlings 15' from me for twenty minutes at least. Wore Sitka Gear Optifade Mountain pants and core top and bottom to wick away moisture. I was cool even in the 90 degree temps. Mornings were perfect.

Called in and had 'ol Tom picture perfect within 15' but he wouldn't step clear of the brush for a safe shot, as he was on one side and never budged once within range. I was wormed into all that mesquite and huisache, and pic was taken from behind my position. 6' to the left and I'd a nailed him. His head was right inside that little hole in the brush dead center:

Video of waterhole:

Spent afternoon time at the feeders and the waterhole where the game cams revealed many hogs over 200#, deer, skunks, bobcats, cows, rattlers, and birds galore:

Skinned Osage at home in the south TX. brush country....perfect camo. Saw 4 rattlers on this trip, one was at least 6'. They were moving around for sure.
